We recently returned from 10 nights at the Ashbee and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday as first time visitors to Sicily even though it rained for three days! The hotel is superbly situated, very close to all amenities but quiet and calming. It is a little pretentious but our room ( superior with large balcony) was lovely, immaculately clean and nicely decorated with a great large shower/bath. All usual things supplied, good hairdryer, slippers, robes, quality toiletries, quality bed linen, quiet efficient aircon, TV, mini bar etc. The lounge/bar was rather austere and not used but the breakfast terrace was lovely with spectacular views and a good selection of food - I must mention Mary who was the so cheerful and obliging, nothing too much trouble and the other young lady whose name I forget but who worked in the Uk for some time. However, we were not very impressed with the restaurant - it may be romantic and the setting is perfect but it was too dark to read the menu and had no ambience. The starters were OK but our main course of 'fritto misto' was covered in what I would call poor chip shop batter and so thick the seafood and veg were lost and the batter was very greasy and repeated on us all night. We ate at a number of other restaurants in the area and found a few that were far superior. The only gripes I had about the hotel were that it is looking a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint, some new carpets, a thorough clean of the pool (black mould in the grouting) and a broken tile with ants and most disappointing was the lack of cushions on the sunbeds. Maybe I am being picky but we stay in Dubai regularly and these things would not be found in a 4/5 star hotel there. I also agree with another reviewer - the hotel should be adults only - on one day we had the pleasure of a gentleman taking his baby in the pool with a full nappy!
