“Could do better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013

We recently returned from 10 nights at the Ashbee and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday as first time visitors to Sicily even though it rained for three days! The hotel is superbly situated, very close to all amenities but quiet and calming. It is a little pretentious but our room ( superior with large balcony) was lovely, immaculately clean and nicely decorated with a great large shower/bath. All usual things supplied, good hairdryer, slippers, robes, quality toiletries, quality bed linen, quiet efficient aircon, TV, mini bar etc. The lounge/bar was rather austere and not used but the breakfast terrace was lovely with spectacular views and a good selection of food - I must mention Mary who was the so cheerful and obliging, nothing too much trouble and the other young lady whose name I forget but who worked in the Uk for some time. However, we were not very impressed with the restaurant - it may be romantic and the setting is perfect but it was too dark to read the menu and had no ambience. The starters were OK but our main course of 'fritto misto' was covered in what I would call poor chip shop batter and so thick the seafood and veg were lost and the batter was very greasy and repeated on us all night. We ate at a number of other restaurants in the area and found a few that were far superior. The only gripes I had about the hotel were that it is looking a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint, some new carpets, a thorough clean of the pool (black mould in the grouting) and a broken tile with ants and most disappointing was the lack of cushions on the sunbeds. Maybe I am being picky but we stay in Dubai regularly and these things would not be found in a 4/5 star hotel there. I also agree with another reviewer - the hotel should be adults only - on one day we had the pleasure of a gentleman taking his baby in the pool with a full nappy!

This was part two of our Honeymoon. A rest and relax away from the maddness of Rome.
The hotel is well located and has stunning views into the gulf of Taormina. Its a very classic hotel, very much of its era.
The suite was smaller than we expected, but pleasant enough. We had to complain about a faulty toliet seat that kept coming off (it was put back on but the problem carried on. We just fixed it ourselves in the end). Again the room was of a style that was not our taste, but the location made up for this, and its a style that is made clear on the website.
The highlight is the pool with its amazing views, a great place to unwind after a long day on your feet in the streets of Taormina.
We did notice that some areas probably needed some TLC, such as old/stained carpets etc, but overall it was prefectly adequate.
We would probably try somewhere else in the area next time, but if you like the style you will love the location.

Very nice hotel and location...stayed as a couple in the classic rooms, small but spectacular pool area - needs some more attention to the finer details - more staff as service can very slow and a little inpersonal at times,

I had 3 luxurious nights with my wife, in this 'little gem' of a hotel in Taormina. Superbly positioned for a 2 minutes walk into the town, yet quiet and somehow aloof. The calm, professional service lent an assured touch to the place, rarely found in bigger hotels and the decor and views from the room just made you want to rest awhile and call for another G and T! Never have i felt so disinclined to make any visits to the surrounding sites. Why go? I had a stunning view and everything i needed here to get some much needed R and R. Finally to top off the long weekend in this cliff top hideaway, we ate in the restaurant. My wife owned and ran an Italian restaurant a few years ago - her hobby IS Italian food - so she knows good Italian food... in my view and many others. And she raved about this meal... we both did. From the minute the Sea urchin pasta with a hint of lemon hit the table to the last coffee and limonchello left, it was a real gastro delight. I failed to see why the restaurant wasn't heaving. Put this chef in London or New york and a doubt you'd get a table. I went to the two, 5 star hotels in town and ate in their restaurants too... just to give you the whole picture. The one that featured in 'The big blue' was awful and the other one next to the amphitheater was good... but not that good. Go to the Ashbee, go and sit back with your favorite tincture, by the pool, feel the breeze coming up from the sea, and perhaps - like me - acknowledge, you made the right call this time.

Room Tip: wait to you see the view from breakfast.

Most have talked about the beautiful property that is very very beautifully done... Fantastic choice of fabric , luxury comfort and it still feels cosy. It is immaculate for the eye! what a manor! What a view. The pool is to small and when the hotel is full too crowded.
I stayed for a week and have been eyed weird because I was alone.. That seamed to be weird for the rest of Taormina :)
The breakfast is a must and I regretted missing it the first 4 days...
The dinner is worth every penny and had extreme detail , service was impeccable
Rooms are stunning and comfortable. Italian sky tv, good mini bar, splashing shower but beautifully designed. One can enjoy just the room :))
Service in the room is fantastic. Service at diner too. Reception was helpful throughout the stay.
I'd go back. My only one advice is that there should be more staff. I had to call the reception the the reception lady came from outside.. It did rang for a while. Mostly the pool bar is not occupied.. And ,softly one man is running the dinner service. Just one more and this place can be paradise.
Tree were no kids really on the daily routine but I would say that the hotel is perfect for couples.
This could be one of THE honeymoon places in Europe!
Easy access to Taormina...you could almost crawl back to the hotel down the hill. (The main road is a 4 meter survival ) then you crawl the rest ;)

Loved my stay looked Taormina. Seen etna and the villa romana.... The outlet village is useless for woman but fab for man.
Next to the hotel one can get some very very good massage 60 euros and hour they could easy ask for 100. (avoid any mani and pedicure)
Great restaurant is nino(pasta starters) granduca (pizza was amazing pasta too)
Great club is the Morgana
The cable car to isola Bella is easy and not far. All wort it....
Go to giardiasis Naxos ( 20 euros with a cab) nice restaurants also shops are open much longer then in the amazing Taormina.
Cab from the airport is 80 euro hotel will charge you 140 -150 euro for a van?!
Have to say I have enjoyed my stay very very much.. The people of Taormina Messina region are vey kind and very nice. One feels welcomed every were.
No one bad impression! Wau. Respect!

Room Tip: I had a junior suite and no balcony. So go for double ;)

We recently spent a lovely 2 nights at The Ashbee and enjoyed every second of it.

Positives: Great Location. Friendly and attentive staff. Beautiful buildings and grounds. Well sized rooms. Free wifi is a nice touch. Best of all is the view from the pool. Absolutely stunning.

Silly improvements: The shower does indeed go everywhere! We had to build a damn of towels to stop the water spreading to the bedroom! The parking is a little pricey. It's €20/day for parking, but a public car park just down the road is €14euros/day or €22/48hours. Still, the added security of parking in the hotel grounds makes it almost worth the money.

Overall, this is not a hotel for a value holiday, but an absolutely unmissable stay that I wish I could experience every day.

Room Tip: Superior double rooms have a nice terrace/patio also.

Five Star Plus in my rating. The hotel has only 25 rooms, beautiful grounds with spectacular views, the pool is inviting but small and it takes only a couple of children to splash around and the stillness and intimacy of the pool area is lost. There is nothing for children at the Ashbee apart from the pool.....they get bored, restless and noisey. There was only a couple of children there during our stay but the family took over the pool as their own.
The staff are fantastic, (special mention here for Mary a well above average waitress) The place is spotless and grounds well groomed. Breakfast on the second floor terrace is a real treat.
Overall a wonderfull time and would I stay at this hotel again....a definite YES but only if it became Adults Only

Room Tip: Some beautiful Superior rooms with small garden terraces are in a small attractive annex a few yard...
