This hotel is simply sublime! There are 23 rooms in the hotel, each forward facing and looking out over breathtaking views of isola bella island, beach and the hills. Etna can be seen in the distance. The rooms are all en suite and extremely clean. We had a TV (useful for my partner to watch the Italian grand prix), ample desk and wardrobe space and even a safe for all those valuables! The balcony though has to be the jewel in the crown with those views and beautiful patio furniture to enjoy a lazy afternoon drink or read.
Each morning breakfast is served on the 4th floor covered terrace area again with those 'panoramic' views. Breakfast itself was a real treat and combined the traditional English bacon and eggs with the slightly more unusual prosecco and wine (well you are on holiday so why not?!), fruit, cereal, fresh bread and various condiments (jams/honey/Nutella, cheese and cold meats) as well as pastries and cakes. Needless to say that we were full! The highlight of breakfast for us was the freshly squeezed orange juice which was simply awesome. The only minor criticsm being that near the end of service this was watered down (presumably to ensure there was enough). Coffee was a huge part of breakfast too with unlimited refills - great for me who loves strong coffee not so great for everyone else when I had a caffeine high!
Right next to the breakfast area was a small seating area where drinks from the bar could be enjoyed (although they would also bring drinks to your room or the pool area). The bar was well stocked and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. I have to say, my Gin and Tonic was a real treat. Each time we ordered a drink we were brought various bowls of snacks to enjoy (free of charge) and after a few rounds, were even treated to pizza or bruschetta.
The pool area was probably my favourite part of the hotel (if indeed a favourite part can be picked). The pool, although not the biggest, was perfect for the number of guests and much easier to complete a length of! The water was a little cold but you got past that very quickly. It was also reasonably shallow which meant it was suitable for all. Surrounding the pool are various areas of sun loungers - some being facing away from the pool area for those who did not like their eyes to be parted from that amazing view - and although it was nearing end of season when we were there, there was plenty of space and we regularly had the pool to ourselves. The extra touches of wc and shower facilities by the pool was great.
As you can tell, I am full of praise for this hotel and think it is a real find. It may not be the cheapest option but it really is good value for money. The staff, particularly front of house and Garbielle, Simone and Andrea were real characters and helped make us all feel welcome, going that extra mile. The cleaning staff were lovely and boy do they clean! The bathroom sparkled each day!
The only downside of the hotel is the road below which can be noisy at peak times (although much quieter from breakfast/pool areas) but the view by far makes up for it and besides, it enoucrages you to get up and enjoy Taormina which we did! Whilst others have criticised the hotel for not having a restaurant, it really doesn't need one! You can order paninis/bruschetta and salads at the hotel and find lots of good, local restaurants (isn't that one of the great things about being on holiday?). There are local bars too and obviously the centre of Taormina is not far away - for those who do not fancy the cable car, you can walk up some stairs to the centre which takes around 20 minutes.
One final point, we used a local taxi-type company to take us from the hotel to the airport (and vice versa) and they can be used for trips whilst there. Most the drivers speak English, French, Spanish and German and add a real personal feel to any trips. Christian is the manager and is a real Sicilian gem. He was the cheapest quote too and can accommodate small or large groups, giving you a price up front. I would highly recommend his services. If you contact him prior to your visit, he will call you back to confirm things. New Travel Services -Tel\fax --; cell - --: --; www.newtravelservices.net
