“One of Taormina's gems!”

We had heard good things about Osteria Nero d'Avola in England some time ago and decided to seek it out when we next came to Taormina. We read the Tripadvisor reviews (good and bad) and arrived prepared to be somewhat disappointed. But far from it! We were late arriving because we got lost but were warmly welcomed and given a choice of tables. We elected to eat downstairs but there is little to choose between the floors. Christina looked after us brilliantly, helping with menu explanations and wine choices. I had the Mediterranean Sashimi which was outstanding. Great quality fish, imaginatively presented. My wife had the Lemon Salad to start with which is unusual and delicious but probably needs to accompany a main course. Christina spotted that it was not going down quickly and rushed to bring out an Orange Salad which was equally lovely. We both then had Fettucini with mushrooms, sausage and tomatoes which was steaming hot and as good a plate of pasta as I have had anywhere. The wine choices are all local and fantastic. Lovely biscuits and a glass of Marsala on the house! We could not have asked for better food or service. So don't be put off by the negative reviews (although all restaurants have bad nights), give this little gem a go. If you experience what we did, you will not be disappointed.

“Good food...but a bit disappointing”

At our hotel's suggestion, we made reservations and went here for dinner. The ambience and food were great. But we felt as if we'd been abandoned as soon as we were seated. We were asked if we wanted water.....but had to ask twice to get it. Everyone else was offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, but here, too, we were ignored. We had to ask for it when the waiter came to take our meal order. The food was good, but not special - dorado fixed two different ways (mine was pan-fried with a pistachio crust; my husband's was in chunks with a delicious sauce). The restaurant makes a special lemon salad (rind and all) which was interesting - glad we shared it since it was too much for one person. Not only did we feel ignored upon arrival, it was apparent that they wanted to do another cover on our table; as soon as we put down our forks, the waiter swept in to clear our plates and ask if we wanted dessert. It was obvious that someone "important" had just showed up and there was no space for his party. Since we still had wine left, and were not in a hurry to leave, they finally had to squeeze in another table for the VIP. However, it made us feel as if we were inconveniencing them by not departing immediately. While the food was good, there are way too many other places in Taormina to eat to give us any reason to recommend Nero D'Avola or to return there.

“Something Different.”

Just visited Taormia for 10 days, went to this restaurant 3 times. It was a nice dining experience, little extras given through the meal. The staff were very friendly & efficient, especially Christina.

“Potentially great, but .....”

We arrived somewhat excitedly at 7.45 for our 8.00 pm booking. The restaurant was not very full, and we decided to go for a tuna tartar and a fish carpaccio. Followed by a shared pasta dish, and then by a lemon salad and two fish dishes. The tartare and carpaccio were light and delicious and full of promise for the food to come. Much as i love caponata (andi do), it was lovely to eat differently. Tthe restaurant started to fill up. However, although we were happy chatting, we began to feel full, and noticing that it was 10.00 and our main course hadn't come, we decided to cancel it. Luckily it wasn't cooked and so it was easy. The waitress was lovely, and gave us some fruit and pudding for free. I felt for her having to face the customers, as we weren't the only people not getting fully served. This is a very good restaurant, but something went very wrong tonight. They must be understaffed. I read one review where slow food is mentioned. I think waiting over two hours to get to your main course and it not being ready is probably using slow food's title to you own advantage. Most people want to eat well executed, fresh produce, but don't need an hour between courses.

“Tasty and ecological.”

Fortunately we saw this restaurant in 2 books and then our concierge (Villa Timeo) gave it a great review. Had a great meal of fresh local produce and local wine (ask for the Grillo from Marsala!). The asparagus and artichokes to start, spaghetti with bottarga to follow and Sicilian meat balls in lemon leaves - can taste it almost a week later! And try the lemon salad - eating raw lemons was a first but these are not normal lemons. The chef has a passion for local and very good produce and came round to explain it - while eating a lemon as if it were a large peach.
Others comments mentioned slow service but we were probably done and dusted in about 2 hours tops. Certainly no delays when we were there and it was busy too.
To be recommended!
