the reason for our stay at the bel soggiorno was to attend our daughters wedding. this is no boutique hotel, family run by mother and son. the rooms were very basic, the shower was a squeeze, but that said, the rooms were cleaned every day, bed sheets changed during our one week stay and clean towels every day. we had no problem with the breakfast which was buffet style and there was ample space to sit outside on the terraces. the only downside to the breakfast was the coffee which you could stand a spoon in, asked for cappucino, that was good. the bel soggiorno has old world charm. yes, the floor tiles in the dining area could have been replaced but my word, the view from our terrace was divine and more. the staff were very courteous and helpful, the son spoke good english and didn't charge for 2 glasses of wine and phone calls my friends made back to england. on our last night we arrived back from dining and Carlos, the son and Luigi the receptionist were in the dining area playing the piano and guitar. they apparently have just started doing this on a Saturday night. Carlos was excellent on the piano and played a wide range of tunes from Clayderman, James Taylor and the theme from the Godfather which seemed quite appropriate. We loved every minute of our stay but the only major downside is the steps across the road from the hotel which avoids the dreadful roads. If anyone has health problems or are overweight, do not stay here, the next level up would be better. I would definately stay here again but only for a week, any more and you would be hard pushed to find things to do. The sight of Mount Etna was great and we did see a red glow one night from the top which quite a few people commented on.

This is probably the best all-round three star hotel I have been to. Sure the showers are terrible, the beds were hard, the television was a tiny relic of the eighties. Sure, it's not in the centre of town and the breakfast is mediocre (the juice was weak squash but the boiled eggs were nice and fresh).

But this is a hotel you could happily stay in for 10 days only popping into town from time to time. The views are amazing, the hillside gardens and orange trees are lovely, the whole feel of the place is just magical.

Strongly recommended, if you can endure a mediocre shower.

Oh, be careful with the parking as well - it's a bit of a struggle to get your car up and down the very steep driveway. The best idea is to drive it all the way down to the bottom, leave your keys with the staff and make it their problem to the extent you can. Even this can be a challenge, though, and even our relatively powerful Croma struggled with the steepness.

We have just returned from a truly wonderful week at the Bel Soggiorno. We had read all the great reviews and it was everything we had expected... and more!! Words cannot describe the beautiful views across the sea, along the coast and up to Etna.
The hotel is situated part way down the cliff, beneath Taormina. So inevitably there are always a lot of steps or slopes which ever way you go. But it is such a tranquil place - our room had a large terrace outside, with table and chairs and a sunbed (and a resident gecko in the outside light), and looked over the terraced garden below. There were lemon and orange trees, hibiscus flowers beneath us.
Our room was simple, clean and very comfortable - there is a feeling of basic, unfussy elegance about the place
Breakfast was served on the terrace with the sea and garden as a backdrop.
We ate out every night at local restaurants and were really spolit for choice. The last week of October seem a great time to go - the hotel, and Taormina generally, were very quiet - but the weather was good.
There is a lot to keep you busy - we enjoyed walking, exploring Taormina's lovely streets, lazing on the beach, going to the top of Etna and even a train trip to Messina.
We can't wait for another excuse to return!

Bel Soggiorno is a lovely old villa perched above Giardini Naxos on the road up to Taormina. Every room has a balcony or patio overlooking the sea. Mine (room.28) had a patio with views over Giardini, the bay and Mt.Etna. Spectacular views by day or night. The rooms are fairly basic, but had everything you could need AND everything worked (a rarity in my experience), and were very clean.
The staff are wonderful, and definitely went that extra mile to make our anniversary stay a memorable one. The service is great.....you want a cold beer? pick up the phone and it arrives etc.
Breakfast is a vast array of tempting items which you can eat on your own pitch or eat on the terrace or in the dining room, wherever you like and (from 7.30 - 10) when you like.
While we were there they were also serving dinner at a very reasonable price and high quality local dishes. We "ate in" 4 nights out of seven and the food was excellent. Of course, served by the very charming and efficient Sebastiano, who was definitely "Signor Fixit" and would endeavour to help with anything you needed.
The hotel was quiet and friendly. Elegant without being at all pretentious.
The only downside I can foresee is for those who are less mobile. The hotel is on 4 levels with no lift (although one is planned next year). The only way into town is by a pretty busy road uphill, or by the shortcut steps nearby. I thought at the time that it would be worthwhile to have a minibus laid on perhaps after breakfast time daily. The walk to town takes about 10mins.
Without doubt the best hotel I've had the pleasure of staying in.
