“Many wonderful places to stay in Ortigia , Find another place.”
Reviewed June 21, 2017 for a stay in January 2017

We went thru Trip Advisor vacation rentals and stayed in Pegaso-La Gorgone Ortigia Apartments for the dates of January 12,2017 to February1,2017. We were 2 guests and rented from Fabio F. Upon arriving the apartment had just been opened up by Sabina and she told us she was Fabio's mother. The apartment is very large with thick limestone walls and one heating /air conditioning unit in the main living area but the ceiling is about 10 feet high . Very little heat was being produced. We requested some heaters if possible. We were supplied with a tiny heater for the bathroom and a heater medium size to use alternating between living room and bedroom at night. We came prepared with Ski underwear and had to use every day with double layers of cashmere sweaters and wool pants to stay warm. We checked very carefully when booking this apartment to be sure it advertised heat. We knew we were booking Winter dates and it would be quite cold. The first Thursday we were there Sabina and here daughter Roberta came to check the ELECTRIC METER . They demanded we pay in Euros for the electric use over 50 Kilowatts per week. We told them in their add Trip Advisor did not have anything listed about limited electric use. They said we must pay and they would try to get money back from Trip Advisor and if not we would have to try to get money back from Trip Advisor . Every Thursday Sabina came to read meter and we wound up paying $260 Euros in cash . Summer renters should be aware because air conditioner may have same charges attached. Problem #2 Upon arrival there was a roll off construction container outside the apartment and several men were using jack hammers to reconstruct the apartment whole apartment. From 7A.M. till4 P.M. there was constant construction noise of jackhammers,pounding and scraping. This had been going on for 1 to 2 months . We asked Sabina why in our correspondence she never mentioned a word about this. She said she hoped they would finish soon. Every day waking to loud noise crashing and banging jackhammers really tried our patience. We called Sabina and even Roberta to please get in touch with Fabio. and were told he was a very busy Lawyer and probably could not help. They offered to have us move to a studio apartment in the Market area.Very small where bed was right near kitchen sink but again NO CHANGE IN PRICE. Otherwise, the apartment was very clean, and the people that came to clean were very nice . The apartment is very central to all things in Ortigia.

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your review and for providing us with feedback from your stay.First and foremost I’m very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your experience at La Gorgone Ortigia Apartments.We take all complaints very seriously and I want to assure you that we have procedures and standards in place to ensure the comfort of all of our guests.

With regards to your concern about the cold and humidity temperature in the apartment, while it is a problem in the winter in all the island, we provide 2 extra electric heaters: one in the bathroom, one in the bedroom and a big heat pump in the living room.The apartment inside is about 65mq and 3 heat sources have been sufficient to heat the rooms.My sister Roberta checked the temperature with you after few days you used the heaters and she had to remove her sweater because it was terribly hot.
As for the electric meter I apologize that it was not clear on TripAdvisor.As you know TripAdvisor didn’t traduced my Italian description in English so you weren’t able to see the following description:

Your rent includes:
- bed linens (changed every week);
- bath towels for each guests (changed every week);
- cleaning of the flat every week;
- all consumption up to 50w per week;

After your compliant I contacted TripAdvisor and the assistance replied me that they would refund you about your extra consumption and than they replied me:

Hello Fabio,

This is the follow up email with regard to “N.of your reservation”

We understand that you had problems with the booking “x” about the extra consumption of electricity, we are sorry for the inconveniences. Our engineers are working daily to synchronize all the platforms in the different languages, however for now we are aware that the description of your advert is not showing in the american version of TripAdvisor.

We request you to send us the invoice so that we can forward the case to the relevant team.

After this I sent the electric bill to the assistance many and many times and they never replied me.I’m so sorry for the inconvenience.Now they finally have updated my description in English also but hey never replied me in order to refund you.May I invite you to contact again the assistance.
Anyway I never had guests with a such big electric consumption as you.Usually the medium consumption is 7 kw per day,your consumption daily was more than the double...Maybe turn off the heater when leaving the flat during the day could be a good option.
Finally about the noise coming from the apartment on the first floor, it was frustrating for you I can imagine and I apologize for this.I didn’t know the owner would began works in January. I proposed you 2 different others apartments for a more relaxing holiday in Ortigia and with the same characteristics (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom with shower,ecc..) but finally you preferred stay up to end of your holidays here.
I had unfortunately the same problems with other 2 guests on the first floor n the same period and they accepted my offer (of course I payed the rental and I couldn’t do nothing to avoid this not because I was busy but because for the Italian law the owner had the right to do renovation (and noises) from 7:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00.
Fortunately works finished in the of March and now it’s very quite (just the sound of the sea only 50 meters away :) ).

I hope that my reply helped to address your concern.I’m happy that you find friendly my sister Roberta and my mum and that you appreciated our cleaning services. I would glad to welcome you back again in the future, me and all my family have a nice souvenir of you.

Thanks again and all the best for your life

Fabio&family

“Great Location and Introduction to Sicily”
Reviewed June 2, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

Rented this apartment in this lovely town of Ortigia, an ancient site originally founded by the Greeks. Although, Ortigia is part of Siracusa, it is full of beautful old stone buildings like in the area of the Piazza Duomo and Roman ruins nearby. The apartment is not accessible by car but we were able to park close enough to pull our suitcases from a block away. Since we rented the apartment for one month, we were able to arrange parking for 40 Euros at the Teatro Municipal Parking lot on the island, about 10 mins walk from the Aapartment. Driving in Ortigia is restricted and with those narrow old streets, we didn't want to drive in that area at all. The apartment was comfortable but we found the lack of natural lighting and the dampness a bit much at times. Some of the furniture may need a little upgrade but we were pleased to be able to cook great meals there with the fresh food purchased from the local Market in Ortigia. Ortigia has lots of great restaurants and we enjoyed several as well. We got some great suggestions about places to visit like Noto and local beaches which we did. Used this place as our home base as we booked a few days visit by car to Palermo, Cefalu and Taormina. It seemed to help ground us by going back to one site. Make sure you get instructions on how the shower and washing machine works and the A/C unit that also heats and dries the apartment.

Since there is no clothes dryer, we also used a local Laundry Shop in Siracusa, a few times because we didn't want to wait a day or two for things to dry. Siracusa has many places to shop but there's lots on the island of Ortgia as well! The contacts for the apartment Roberta and her Mother were very helpful throughout our stay!

“Perfect little paradise.”
Reviewed April 25, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

This chic little home away from home has been cleverly and artistically renovated to respect the age and style of the building while having all mod cons (including an amazing massage shower). Is in a great location just minutes stroll from the sea, beautiful bars and retaraunts and the daily fresh markets. Eat out or eat in as you please and enjoy living in a quiet street with friendly locals. Easy bus to Syracuse to see wonderful sites including amazing San Giovanni catacombs.

“A wonderful apartment in a wonderful town”

We spent 3 very pleasant nights at the Pegaso apartment. We loved Ortigia and loved the apartment and its location. The neighborhood is going a fast process of gentrification. yet there is just enough of the old slum down the narrow alley to give the visitor a whiff of Old Times. The very spacious apartment was well appointed, the kitchen impressively so. The only serious weakness in this specific aparment was the bathroom. The toilet seat is not comfortable for people with longer than average legs. The shower appartus, which was a fancy piece of plumbing a few years ago, is now in a very sorry state and must be replaced. Yet we still recommend the Pegaso apartment wholeheartedly.

The one drawback with Ortigia if you have a car is the zonal traffic restrictions which may parking a bit tricky. Apart from that Ortigia and Syracuse are wonderful places to visit. The sea is never far away and the swimming is a delight. there are lots of interesting things to do and see, the eating places are abundant and cater for all tastes.
Our hosts Fabio and Roberta were helpful with communicating the traffic issues early on, and we were greeted by Sibana who gave us lots of useful information to make our stay as interesting as possible.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our time in Syracuse and had a great stay at the apartment.

The apartment was lovely, everything you needed, spacious, and lots of character. Ideal location - one minute walk from sea, and a few minutes walk down lovely narrow streets to centre of town.Miss Ferrara, who met us on arrival, was very friendly and helpful. The town is beautiful, lots to see, and some fab restaurants. Would definitely recommend the apartment and Ortigia.

I've spent a lovely holiday in La Gorgone Ortigia Apartments, I couldn't have chosen a better place to stay! The apartment is in the very city center of Ortigia Island, just 100 meters from the seaside! It has been amazing to have a nice breakfast in the patio and then go straight to the beach in the morning. The apartment was very clean with all the comforts, the landlord kind, reliable and helpful. I 'll definitely come back next summer!
