Our first step in Syracuse was to head to the old city of Ortigia and the first place we visited was the market and happened onto this wonderful wine shop cum delicatessen. Having done some tasting we decided to return for lunch after wandering round the old city (don't miss Archimedes museum) we returned to have a selection of cheeses, cold cuts, dips, beers and wine. What a wonderful mix of tastes not to be forgotten for many a day. The folks who run the place were exuding hospitality and we felt like one of the family ....... an experience not to be missed.

This little deli was at the end of the open air market. They had a fabulous plate of assorted meats and cheeses and olives. It included ricotta cheese with chocolate chips

I arrived with my wife unexpectedly at Fratelli Burgio on our first day in Ortigia. This is a delicatessen with style and was bustling with customers. After 5 minutes we were shown to a small, high table and seated on two stools. We ordered a platter (large breadboard) of Siclian delicacies prepared while we waited. The flavours of the food were so natural, there are no additives, simply pure quality. We had a glass of house red wine to accompany the food and this was also very good. Fratelli Burgio is a stand-out and not to be missed if you are visiting this ancient town.

We caught sight of a platter of food inside this shop on our way through a visit to Syracuse market, and although there was no discernible menu on display, we returned later to try to secure such a feast for ourselves later in the day.

We perched ourselves at one of the casual high tables and I don't even remember how we made an order - I think a combination of pointing to what other people had and using the feedback of a friendly American couple just finishing their last few morsels beside us. The local wine arrived in big glasses, shortly followed by the food - wow! A delicious range of cheeses, meats, tomatoes, olives, breads, all elegantly set out on a huge plate. The next hour or so was a filled with lots of 'mmmmm's' and 'yummmmmms' as we worked our way through the many delights, and a few glasses of red wine.

We were there fairly late in the day - around 3pm I think - the market outside was over and they were tidying up around us, but never made us feel we were imposing. There was plenty of banter between the staff, who remained attentive to us despite clearing up for the day.

This is what Sicilian food is all about and well worth a visit if you are in Syracuse.

We visited Fratelli Burgio as part of a culinary group visit to the mercato in Syracuse. The staff were generous with the samples and gracious with the service. They patiently vaccum-packed each and every item to ensure our continued enjoyment of Italian cuisine once we returned to the US. Two weeks later and my only regret is that I didn't buy more.
