Great location , parking opposite the hotel , but this was not free when we went, I would recommend you book a room on the first floor as we were on the second floor , which had the restaurant above our room and we were woken each morning around 7.30am by the scrapping of the metal chairs and table's being moved around, our room was very spacious and lovely views overlooking the harbour.

Room Tip: Sea views , first floor

The Grand Hotel Ortigia reminded me that a five star hotel is not about the bling but about the detail - and they know this too well. This turn-of-the-twentieth-century hotel retains its older charm and exudes attention to detail wherever you rest your eyes - from the rigorously maintained date written in white pebbles in the garden just outside the panoramic glass lift to the little 'pasta di mandorla' left on your bed at turndown time, and the little tag highlighting the maid who would have set up your room on the day.

And what about the well-kept secret - the penthouse restaurant 'La Terrazza sul Mare'. Make sure to get a table in the terrace itself, lie back and enjoy the sun or shade - whichever you prefer. Sampling the sumptous buffet breakfast here in the morning and watching the two-thousand architectural history of Ortigia unfold in front of you in the morning glow, against a bluegreen background of the clear seas of the Siracusa bay. And having dinner here in the evening almost feels sinful - surely having such an exquisite three course meal in such exquisite surroundings is a steal at 39 euros.

Tasteful property. Free parking right outside the hotel, which is located right by the harbor. Friendly staff. Air conditioning needed some attention, but other than that no complaints at all. Much cheaper rates on weekdays compared to weekends.

I was dubious about booking at this hotel because the reviews were very mixed. However, we were pleasantly surprised: the service was excellent; the staff were extremely helpful; the food was good; and our room (number 202) was lovely. Our only criticisms were that the space for storing clothes was minimal and that the pudding menu was a bit limited. We found also that sometimes it was noisy;; we suffered from a barking dog (on a boat moored in the nearby harbour) and a crying baby in the adjacent room but fortunafely thrdr were temporary problems.

Ortigia is delightful and is a reasonable centre for trips to other places.

Room Tip: Room 202 was large and an unusual shape as it was on the corner of two streets which were not at rig...

Very nice hotel in old building, many rooms with marina view, breakfast room with overview of Ortigia. Nice breakfast, only a pity that eggs are not served before 8 am (we were on a business trip). Sufficient choice of cold items on breakfast buffet.

Overall, I would rate this hotel a 3+/4-. This hotel is centrally located in Ortigia, close to the historical parts of Siracusa. Outside of Ortigia, there is nothing to see or visit within walking distance.

The hotel rooms vary. At first, we were put in Room 115, a loft. The bedroom and a TV were up a narrow stairway. Downstairs was a second TV, desk, a sofa, and the bathroom. Navigating the steps would be difficult for an older person, especially at night. The air-conditioning did not work and the room remained at 24.5 celsius. Opening the windows did not cool the room and was not an option at night because the windows opened to the street level. Management responded quickly but was unable to get the air-condition to work.

We were moved to a single level room with Cathedral ceilings, which was huge. (Room #20). The bathroom was also very large. The bed was comfortable and there were adequate electrical outlets. We had to request assistance with the TV and the safe because no instructions were posted. We had to use the magnetic strip on one of our credit cards to operate the safe. The free WiFI signal was strong and there was a free, but older desktop in the lobby.

Consistent with our experience in a number of European hotels, there was no coffee pot. The breakfast was fine but not spectacular. If you arrive when the dining room opens for breakfast, you will have to wait for some of the food selections.

If this review was helpful, please indicate "Yes."

Room Tip: Avoid lofts; ask for room on higher floor if you like to leave your window open.
