Owner description: This is the most extensive archaeological museum in Sicily, with its wide collection of fossils and figures of Ancient Siracusa including the famous statue "Venus Anadiomene," in which Venus rises from the sea.

The exhibits were laid out in an orderly presentation and made viewing everything very easy. The staff on hand were very friendly and helpful.

This is a very interesting museum and it takes time to see everything. The numismatic section - in a strongroom - is fantastic. The hours for this differ from the main section so check carefully.

As the rain poured down outside this was the place to be. And it paid dividends during our stay in Sicily - we knew what we were looking at instead of walking straight past something remarkable without noticing it properly. A great introduction for those lacking a degree in ancient history.

This huge museum is most attractive to those with a deep interest in antiquities. There are numerous examples of every sort of item you would expect, but for us, 100 perfect Greek vases was perhaps 80 more than we needed. It would be helpful if there was a booklet of highlights. We really enjoyed learning about the architecture of the temples. More explanations in English would be helpful, particularly in the section about town planning.

I visited here last week and I agree to some extent with a previous review regarding the layout, but just took it from Section A, to B etc. In terms of the programme, there was no English language one available, but most of the stands and exhibits had English translations.
All that aside, this is a fantastic place. I didnt have very much time in Sicily and was not able to see all of the historical sites that I wanted to. This however made up for it and has actually helped me decide and plan a further trip to go to the areas with more Greco Roman sites of interest. There are some fantastic excavations and explains the history really well. Not sure if children will like it much as not much interaction for them.
