“So much history behind this city”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

Syracuse is so under rated. Having travelled Italy mainland extensively, we find Syracuse so rich in History and Culture, yet nobody sings about it. Most tourists spend time in Palermo and Taormina and only just a few hours in Syracuse. This is our 2nd visit in 2 years and will return next spring for more of its culture !

“Lovely to wander”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

The island of Ortygia is a maze of little streets with plenty of little cafes and bars. It is a pleasure to wander round and every corner brings a new photo opportunity. There are a few shops but the determination of the shop assistants to keep us under surveillance meant that it was less of a pleasure than it might have been. They clearly have a major problem with tourists shoplifting which is a shame.

“Fascinating Historical Rabbit-Warren”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

This is a great place to explore on foot, with a surprise around every corner. It's a little bit like Venice without the canals. There are plenty of little eateries tucked away and shops specialising in local delicacies (mainly almond & pistachio related!). Driving and parking are a bit challenging due to the narrowness of the cobbled streets.

“Definitely the place to stay”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

Ortygia has the charm -- and the touristy feel -- of Venice. Its a small, very walkable island, with very good places to eat and plenty of things to do. The mainland monuments are a walkable distance away, and that walk, through the bustlingly busy modernish city, will convince you that staying on the island was very much the way to go.
