Owner description: This offshore island was occupied by the Greek colonists who fortified it and constructed the earliest structures, including the temples of Athena and Apollo, whose remains can still be seen today.

Ortygia is a place to wander and discover. Every street is a picture postcard and coming out onto Piazza Duomo at night is stupendous. The beautiful sea is a constant. The Galleria Regionale museum (Palazzo Belomo) is really worth a visit.

Ortygia is not bad, but from what we've seen we believe its reputation is wildly overrated. It's crumbling, alright, and the Piazza del Duomo is nice enough, but we definitely have seen old town quarters that were more beautiful. The Fonte Aretusa was especially disappointing.

What a wonderful place, full of atmosphere, beautiful places to eat & lovely streets to get lost in.

As part of our trip to Syracuse, following a visit to the Greek and Roman remains, we went on to the Isle of Ortygia, which is accessed by small bridges from the main city. As well as enjoying a stroll by the sea we went to the main square containing the Cathedral. It is undoubtedly one of the most attractive squares we have been to, enhanced by the beautiful weather which allowed the Sun to highlight the statues and the buildings. As well as visiting the Cathedral we took time to have a quiet drink in one of the outdoor restaurants and just sat admiring our surroundings.

very nice place to visit, walk the streets & alleys, walk along the sea and enjoy the view (especially the sunset) and views. Visit the local market, and the Archimedes museum.
