The Roman Theatre ruins are amazing, as is the Ear of Dyonisis, but we couldn't understand why the Paradise Garden was half closed off, without any reason (usual for Italy, we've discovered)

I definitely recommend a guide, they are knowledgeable and speak good English. I learnt that the Greek theatre was the home of comedy and the nearby roman amphitheatre is so named because it is two theatres making a round. The caves dug by slaves is fascinating as is the Caravaggio connection with the ruins and the town.

if you are into archaeology buy the 13 50 euro ticket that gets you into the museum and the archaeological site it last for three days and they are both well worth seeing

Best seen with a guide otherwise will miss a lot of information. Greek, Roman and nature effects on the environs.

The archaeological Zone in Syracuse is of particular interest to those with an interest in the history of Sicily but i would not recommend it for young children. The Greek amphitheatre is a remarkable survivor and the old quarry is fascinating but needs explanation. in the summer it would be very hot. The "bathroom" facilities are expensive and not to be recommended unless you are in real need.
