“Really lovely place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2014

We had a lovely short break here and would highly recommend it. Our room, No 205, was large, clean, comfortable and with a great sea view. Air con was very welcome but the windows also opened which was very nice for a sea breeze. We didn't eat at the hotel apart from the nice breakfast so can't comment but I did have a treatment which was absolutely fantastic. Probably the best massage I've ever had. It was lovely to see the nuns at work making coffee and so on! The chapel is also lovely. Very well placed to see the whole of Ortigia and Siracusa generally. We parked right outside the hotel with no trouble at all. Lovely staff. Very highly recommended.

I stayed here for two nights in late June 2014. This seems like a luxury hotel without the luxury price. The room and bathroom were spotless. The room was a decent size (single) and the bathroom was surprisingly large. The staff is very attentive. The hairdryer did not work in my room and they replaced it immediately. The breakfast is plenty with yogurt, meats and cheeses, fruit and various drinks. This hotel is conveniently located in Ortygia, facing the water. I will definitely stay here again. They also have a spa at the hotel but I did not use it.

Domus Mariae Benessere is the mothernouse and former convent the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family who continue to own and direct this extremely pleasant hotel and spa. It is a very convenient location easily walkable to the whole of Ortigia. The staff were knowledgeable and courteous staff excellent recommendations for restaurants and able to provide useful directions. The hotel advertises a pool, but we discovered afterward that the pool is only for therapeutic purposes.

Dear Patrick,
thank you for your time and your reservation.
I'm happy to read about your experience: we work everyday to ensure a lovely stay.
The pool is by reservation and has not only therapeutic purposes but also SPA: we prefer to reserve the SPA in an exclusive use, so that you are not with other guests and have more privacy (so that's also why we ask for a reservation). Our SPA manager is always around for security purposes.

Hope to welcome you soon
Best regards
Sister Rosamaria

We were traveling by car around Sicily and stayed in mostly 3 star bed and breakfasts and hotels.
Upon arrival the staff was most welcoming and helped us with parking and choices for dining. Our room was small but comfortable and decorated nicely, with a bathroom that exceeded our expectations. It was modern, and larger than most by European standards. The beds were very comfortable and provided us a good night's sleep. The continental breakfast had many choices and everything we tasted was good. The location was excellent and walking distance to good restaurants. The hotel itself was furnished with some beautiful antiques which added to its classical feel I would rate this a 4 star property and would stay here again. This was an excellent value.

If I was just reviewing the hotel I would give Domus Mariae 4 stars instead of 3. The location is excellent: a five minute walk from all the restaurants and bars in Ortigia in a quiet quarter. We had a sea view room which had great views and was really comfortable. The roof terrace is a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. Breakfast was average with limited choice and poor coffee.

We did however have some issues with the spa offered by the hotel. Firstly they got the reservation wrong, which meant we had planned a day to stay in Syracuse only to find they had booked us in for the next day instead. They then further delayed the reservation for the following day by another half hour. When we arrived at 6pm on the day we were made to wait for 25 minutes in reception as the woman who ran the spa was giving a massage. Obviously it was more important for her to fit in a massage despite us reserving the spa area.

The actual spa experience was bizarre. The woman in charge was walking around so it never really felt very private. Plus, there was a very obvious CCTV camera in the pool area relaying images back to reception. When we went through the sauna area there was another person in there already waiting for a massage. It was not private at all and not what you expect for €70 per couple.

I'd recommend this hotel as a good base for staying in Ortigia but would definitely not recommend using the wellness programme in the spa.

Room Tip: Sea view room on the second floor was excellent.

Stayed here for four nights in July 2014. Booked at the end of last year so got a great price. This proved excellent value. The double room was very spacious with high ceilings, nice furniture and good shower. The decor and furniture in the whole hotel is very classical which really suits the old converted convent, perfect!
The breakfast was very nice with an ample selection of continental choice.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Free parking is available (first come first served), we never had a problem.
Lovely roof terrace.
Nice location on the seafront in ortygia.
Overall, a great trip, many thanks!!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2014 via mobile

We spent two nights here. The room was well-equipped and very clean, the staff were extremely friendly and competent. I would not pay the surcharge for a sea view again, as our room had a small window high up on the wall. The location is excellent for Cortigia, but not for the Greek theatre and the archeological zone. The restaurant is a bit awkward, as it is split into three small rooms. We had dinner at eight and found we were the only ones dining. The food was good, but as we were served by a nun the whole affair was a bit sombre. At breakfast the rolls were stale, they were very slow at refilling whatever had run out and you are charged for your second hot drink
