“Sense the Giving!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

A former convent and school, this remarkable hotel is split across two period buildings just across the road from each other.  Each building is fronted by the Ortigian coastline so there is ample opportunity to book yourself a room with a breath-taking view which, in the smaller building, is approached by floor to ceiling french windows and a balcony. Incidentally, the smaller building was the first hotel in Siracusa and prior to that  a convent for 24 years while the larger building was once a substantial private residence and later given to the nuns by the owner. In 2010 the larger building underwent extensive renovations. I had the opportunity to experience both buildings during a 4-day stay.  The style is one of relaxed comfort augmented by lovely touches that are thoughtful and uplifting: a bowl of fresh fruit on every landing and an abundance of flowers in all communal areas. On the walls hangs a range of carefully selected prints, paintings and photographs and, interestingly, some documentary photographs of the former convent. From the foyer to the spectacular roof terrace there is a rare sense of pervading peace and tranquility.  Some rooms are equipped with computers; bicycles are freely available; a wellness centre offering various treatments is on site; the breakfast buffet table is feast of fruits, meats, breads and cereals.

We accidentally found Domus Mariae after rejecting another hotel where I had made a reservation. Domus is run by Ursuline nuns on the island of Ortigia in Siracusa, Italy. There are two buildings in the complex. Our first room, obtained rather late after the other hotel fiasco, was a comfortable interior one with a huge bathroom, but no shower. The next day we moved to the other building and had a lovely second floor room with balcony, two double beds and a sofa. Both buildings had beautiful solariums on the roof, with great views of Siracusa harbor. We only wished we could have stayed longer to enjoy the spa and continue exploring the city.

The staff were very attentive and gave us good recommendations for restaurants and sights to visit. The included breakfast was above average. Our only concern is that the second buildin doesn't have an elevator, but the staff carried our heavy bags up and down. That building does have a stair seat for disabled guests to get to the second floor but the solariums would be out of reach in both facilities.

We would definitely return to Domus if we travel to Siracusa again.

Room Tip: Rooms with ocean view in the annex building might be best. It's always a good idea to visit the...

This is the perfect place to stay in Siracusa-Ortigia. Spotless clean and comfortable rooms, a gentle luxury atmosphere everywhere, the SPA (percorso benessere) was a wonderful experience. Breakfast was very good and variable, I appreciated especially the perfect cappuccino, the home made yoghurt, and a delicious breakfast cake. I didn't try the restaurant but the menu looked perfect for staying healthy. Parking spaces just in front of the hotel. Highly recommended.

This hotel is run by the Ursuline Sisters and one feels the calm atmosphere as soon as you enter. The location is perfect, across from the seawall and within easy walking to all the Old Town sights including the open-air market. A very nice breakfast was included but I don't believe there is a regular restaurant during the winter months.

Room Tip: Room 103 is spacious and suitable for handicap access. Peaceful decor with windows facing the sea.

Dear guest,
Thank you for your very positive review.
We are pleased to read your comment.
As you saw, Domus Mariae is within walking distance from the city center, overlooking the beautiful sea of Syracuse.

Our restaurant is open all year, Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner by reservation.
Every morning we show the daily menu with typical dishes of Sicilian cuisine and the Mediterranean diet.
Maybe your stay was a Sunday or our chef took a day off.

We hope to welcoming you soon and enjoy the exquisite cuisine of our restaurant.

Kind regards

I wasn't sure to what to expect but this hotel was really a gem. My room was tiny but spotless, comfortable and modern. The bed was so comfortable and the hotel was quiet. It is within easy walking distance of anything you want to see including the daily food market. An extra perk...if you're an early riser, all you have to do is cross the street to see the sun rise over the water. Highly recommend it.

We stayed here with a Rick Steves tour this winter and have nothing but praise for the experience. Breakfast was fine and the bed was perfect. Siracusa is a great walking town and the hotel's location allows you the best access.

Room Tip: Try to use Rick Steves advice for housing.

Very nice hotel on the island of Ortygia. Stayed 2 nights while traveling solo as part of group on a 10-day tour of Sicily. Clean, comfy room and bed. I didn't have much of a view - my room was located on an airshaft -- but room was attractive and the hotel is waterside, so you don't have to go far for a seaview. Run by an order of nuns who maintain a low profile and let the hotel professionals take care of business. Though there is a lovely little chapel conveniently located within the hotel for those who care about such things. Hotel provides a number of spa services which I did not avail myself of (prefering to explore the outdoors), but looked quite nice and other tour members did make use of what was on offer. Quite cold and rainy in Sicily during my stay so reliable heat and hot water was much appreciated (cannot say that for all the hotels used by the tour).

Room Tip: Let 'em know if you'd prefer not to be on the airshaft.
