“Great staff, and location”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

This hotel has an excellent location, front office staff and breakfast staff were great too and were helpful and friendly, breakfast was limited but fresh. that covers the good points....

now the issues;
- no restaurant or room service even though there was supposed to be
- no tv channels apart from local tv even though sat tv and pay per tv was supposed to be included
- the bathroom shower cubicle was possibly the dirtiest i have ever seen in a hotel with mould and dirt that had obviously been there for ever
- the towels were on their last legs

this place needs the management or owner to stay in the hotel for a few nights to see the low quality levels they have for some reason successfully attained

The location is truly breathtaking as we had a sea view. When we arrived, we quickly checked in and then left for dinner. We are on a 4 city tour and this is our second stop. The first hotel we were in was a 5 star, and we knew why...we expected a nice hotel as well considering this is a "4 star" or so their signs display.

After doing some shopping around town, I ran back to the room real quick to use the toilet. After flushing, the toilet started "screaming"...the valve for the toilet was in much need of replacement. upon my exit of our room, i closed the door and pushed on it to make sure it latched....the door opened...I shut it tight, and tried again...it opened again. Needless to say I wasn't happy, but we were on our way to dinner and the hotel seemed fairly empty, so upon my return after dinner, I told the receptionist who happily moved us to another room next to ours. No problems with the door.

HOWEVER, we had the same problem with the toilet, screaming. After winding down and ready for a shower, we found mold growth in all 4 corners of the shower, excessive growth in 2 corners. As well, the shower drain excessively slow, leaving 2" of water in the shower pan. The shower door was a little rough opening and closing as well.

We did find shampoo and shower cap and q-tips (expected in a 4 star) but no conditioner. It also appeared that they had not cleaned behind the sinks on the exotic tiles, as there is excessive water stains on the tile.

When we opened the minibar, all the drinks were barely cooled...it's hard to drink a slightly cool beer. The temp needed to be lowered by a good 10 degrees or more.

The staff has been very pleasant and accommodating, but I'm extremely disappointed in their maintenance and I do not care to change rooms again. I can't imagine that house keeping has not noticed this problem in 2 showers.

I hope they read this and follow up to the repairs in a timely manner. Room 115 & Room 116.

Room Tip: The seaside view is worth it!!!

We stayed for 5 nights during the summer 2012.

Very good location within Syracuse, with a great view on the sea. Area was a short walk from many nice restaurants and was quite calm.

Breakfast was very good with a lot of choice and very helpful staff.

The rooms were very well maintained and spacious. Our room had a small balcony, which was quite nice.

Only slight minus was that it sometimes took a little bit of time to park the car.

We would definitely go back!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony

We arrived to the hotel late at night with a terrible weather storm an pouring rain so by our arrival we were just greatful to get inside. The next morning we really discovered the grandeour of this hotel If you choose a rom with a sea view you will have that. There is only a small street between the hotel and the sea. Great. The hotel itself is a bit worn but fully acceptable and with a good price. We also discovered that the hotel has a very good chef who could make the most tasty meals. Otherwise the location is very central (that is central in the old town, on the island of Ortigia) with quite a lot of really good restaurants within comfortable walking distance. The sea is also present everywhere.
Lucky as we were the weather cleared up after the first night.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view.

Spent two nights here in October. Location is great, overlooking the sea on Ortigia. There's lots of shops, restaurants and piazzas within a short walking distance.

Rooms are spacious, king bed, minibar, tv and free wifi. Bathroom is large but the shower cabinet is a little cramped.

Breakfast is okay. There's a selection of boxed Kellogg's cereals, juice, bowl of fresh pineapple/ melon, scrambled eggs, selection of ham and cheeses, yogurt, cornetti biscuits, mini Donuts and croissants, 2 different cakes and if course fresh espresso- coffee.

We had a mixed experience with the staff- they were generally curt and not particularly helpful, although two of the female staff we dealt with were efficient, friendly and helpful.

Also if you are driving, watch out for where you park as we got a ticket, even though we'd checked with the hotel staff if it was okay to park where we did.

We spent three nights at the Royal Maniace. The location is good - right at the tip of the island. The rooms were clean, though the wood floors were dusty. There often was a sewer odour coming from the bathroom. When we arrived both the sink and shower had drainage problems. When we complained, the staff responded quickly to fix it.

Our room had a sea view, which I would recommend. I don't think I would stay in this hotel if not for the view, which really is what the selling feature is. The modern decor is not for everyone, but it is what it is.

Breakfast was okay- fair amount of variety. Staff in the breakfast room was exceptionally friendly. Reception staff was okay, but not high on the service end of things.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a sea view.

This hotel was simple but very nice and decent size for a european hotel. Very clean comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. My view of the sea was spectacular. The location was good being close to many restaurants but actually ortigia is so small you could easily walk to anywhere on the peninsula from anywhere else on the peninsula. Hotel had a eurpean feel to add to the experience. Not like being in a chain hotel that feels the same regardless of what country you are in.

Room Tip: pick a front facing room for spectacular views but if you want a quieter room ask for a room that do...
