“Cozy, charming hotel in historic Ortigia”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

We recently stayed three nights at the Algila and had an excellent experience. I liked that the hotel isn't cookie-cutter at all and maintains the charm and unique layout of a historic structure, combined with nice mod cons (two elevators, Bulgari products in the bathrooms, good a/c...)

We had three rooms of varying sizes, among them 401 which opens onto a large roof deck with jacuzzi -- really nice. My single room (301) was small with a very small bathroom / tiny shower -- but was priced to reflect that vs. the other rooms we had -- and was comfortable if simple nonetheless.

The breakfasts were very good, with an appealing array of fruits, cakes, breads, meats, cheeses etc. as well as egg dishes / omelets made to order and served in atmospheric rooms. A dinner in the restaurant -- included in our stay -- was less successful; we were the only people there, and while the service very accommodating, the food was good but not great.

Marcello at the front desk was most hospitable and very patient and helpful with advice about parking, beaches, restaurants etc. -- very professional, energetic and a total pleasure. The hotel also provides thick, freshly-laundered towels and sun umbrellas for beach trips, and bicycles for riding around the magical streets of Ortigia.

I would definitely return to and happily recommend the Algila Hotel.

Our impression of the hotelroom was just perfect; it was clean and nice, and fresh fruit was waiting on us. We enjoyed our stay very much, big thanks too everyone at the hotel!

After reading some reviews of hotels in Ortigia, we decided on this hotel because of the location and charm of the hotel, and happily the hotel and room exceeded our expectations. We heard/read that some of the rooms can be dark, so we booked the spa room on the top floor. It had a lovely, large patio with a large hot tub, outdoor seating and an unobscured view of the sea. The room had plenty of light from the french doors to patio, as well as the large windows above the private stairs leading up to the room. The bathroom had both a clawfoot tub and separate large shower with rainforest head and all rooms have Bulgari products (and Mavis toothpaste). Some of the plumbing was a bit hit and miss, but this seems to be a fairly common occurrence in Italy and Sicily. We loved the breakfast (everything was included, both the buffet and/or the menu options, and they were happy to make pretty much anything anyone asked for) and the coffee was the best of our trip. Our only disappointment was the restaurant was closed for dinner on Sundays and Mondays (the 2 nights we stayed at hotel). The staff recommended a couple of great local places for dinner and the staff in general were super helpful, accommodating and very sweet. We would love to return to Siracusa and stay at the charming Algila.

Room Tip: splurge for the Spa Room for extra light and no noise issues

We stayed here for five nights. The hotel is the middle of charming Syracuse. We came with a car and didn't have a problem finding free parking spaces every night. The rooms are small and equipped with all the essentials, but the air-con is definitely not strong enough. Also our shower leaked in room 305.

The breakfast was good and you can order anything you wanted from the menu which is all included. Maybe the staff should have been more attentive and ask if you wanted another coffee for examples. Small things that matters :)

They also had som wifi problems when we were there, but they must have fixed that by now.

There are some really good restaurants nearby. Just take the chance and get lost - you will for sure discover some nice restaurants and bars. Syracuse is one of our favourite places in Sicilly.

This is a fantastic hotel. We loved being here our entire stay. The room was comfortable for our 2 kids and spacious enough. The staff were the friendliest staff we have ever come across. So helpful and friendly and nothing seemed a problem. This just makes the stay even better. They were always happy to help. The breakfast staff were amazing and so good with our kids requests. Very friendly breakfast staff. Made the morning enjoyable and great coffee and food. The room was spotless. Excellent location. Walking distance to all restaurants and centre. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Sicily and highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

This is a lovely hotel beautifully positioned on the coast of the island of Ortigia, we stayed here four nights. The hotel responded quickly and helpfully to email queries prior to booking and arranged for a car to pick us up from the airport. The staff at the hotel are all very friendly and attentive without being fussy or overbearing. They recommended restaurants to suit our requests each evening all within easy walking distance and we were never disappointed. We had booked a junior suite which is a good sized room described accurately and well on the website. There is good free Wi-Fi in the public areas. We had dinner in the restaurant when we arrived, we were an hour late because of a flight delay from London but they were very accommodating and we never felt rushed. Food and wine here is very good although most people do seem to eat out (as we did, apart from the first night). Breakfast is also very good. The facilities in the room and bathroom all worked as they should and the room is well equipped and comfortable; the room was very quiet and we had an excellent stay here. One small problem for some readers may be the air conditioning; this works fine but isn't controllable from the room, it's centrally controlled so if you wish to sleep with the air con off you need to ring down to reception and then, presumably, ask for it to be switched on again in the morning. However, this is a small thing. When we left we moved on to Taormina by train and they phoned ahead to our hotel and arranged for a car to be at the station when we arrived. This is a lovely, friendly, helpful and comfortable hotel and we would certainly return if we revisit Siracusa.

Stayed here for three days. Great breakfast. We had an interior balcony room one night and then changed to the ocean view (which was fantastic). Rooms were clean and well decorated. Great service, helpful and attentive front desk staff. Asked for internet in the room and they plugged in a router so we would have service. Checked out the bikes several times, really great way to see the island. They also provided great recommendations for restaurants. It was a bit pricy but we felt the service and location was worth it. The GPS might tell you it is before the piazza (plaza) but keep driving to the piazza and it is on your left.

Room Tip: Interior room very quiet, but ocean view balcony room pretty quite too and great view and better lay...
