We had a wonderful time at I cavalli del sole with our young family (6 year old and 3 year old).
Sicily in August is busy, particularly the beaches, so it was wonderful to be able to escape the crowds into our own place surrounded by a large estate of lemon trees, well set back from the road on its own drive, with a gate to the road.
Great to have our own pool, which was child friendly - half of it was <1m deep, the rest about 2m so perfect for jumping in. Also raised from the ground so no risk of kids falling in.
The house has lots of character, with a real range of artworks, design and a piano. Also two kitchens, one with wood-burning pizza oven, one with all the standard mod cons.
The gardens are really varied with lots of lemons, plus prickly pears, pomegranates and other fruits, and lots of fragrant flowers.
Massive amounts of indoor and outdoor space, three different outdoor dining tables so you can always be somewhere shady. Air conditioning in most rooms and I think all the bedrooms. Would be a great place for a big party.
Also a rooftop terrace with great sunsets and views on a clear day of Etna.
Ornella the owner wasn't there in person but was always there on whatsapp to answer any questions and gave some good recommendations for the off the beaten path local beaches. Pillirina in particular was a real highlight.
I would say a car is essential as there is nothing within walking distance - although you could have a very relaxed time just in the house and grounds. There is a bakery, gelato and small shop in Aranella, a few minutes drive away. Mount Etna is an easy day trip and Syracuse, Noto, Marzamemi, Vendicari all less than half an hour.
