“Delightful new B&B in central Palermo”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

This charming B&B, off a garden piazza in the La Kalsa District, is just recently renovated. They are still trying to establish a name for themselves, and the decoration and general service are both very good. As we came in the low season, they also made us a good deal on the room.

The room was new, well appointed, and clean, with a lovely en suite shower (we had the fuscia room on the ground floor). Breakfast is very good, and the owner and staff very friendly. The location is good for most of the main sites in the city, the La Kalsa District is quite attractive, and much tidier than some of the other parts of town.

There is wifi throughout the hotel, but it can be a bit patchy in consistency of signal.

Room Tip: We had the Fuscia room on the ground floor. Very nicely decorated, and easily accessible. There was...

Great location in a quiet side street in Kalsa, which is close to the sea, and ideal for walking around the city centre. Very modern, freshly renovated and designed rooms with a small balcony to the inner patio. Free parking is available at 200m distance (Via Carlo Rao). Breakfast was a disappointment though. The coffee seemed to be at least a day old and heated up in the microwave. Apart from that, this place can only be recommended.

We stumbled upon this B&B in a tiny alley off Via Alloro by accident. The La Kalsa district is ideal for exploring old Palermo on foot and the B&B itself is just a 10min walk from the (bus) station. The charming owner Donatella showed us around and we booked on the spot! There is a nice little courtyard giving access to the rooms and breakfast room. We had a room on the first floor adjacent to a communal kitchen (very useful). Fittings and furniture in the bedroom and bathroom were ultramodern, yet practical. There were good LED reading lamps and effective free WIFI. The room was very quiet and there was a balcony. Hospitality and friendliness were of the highest order. The owner even printed out our boarding cards for us and deposited them on the bed - how about that? An early breakfast was no problem on our departure day. Handsome Tommy the cat is ever-present and likes to greet guests from the reception counter!

The breakfast was basic Italian, but with fresh rolls and croissants. Francesco's the famous foccaceria is just round the corner if you're feeling hungry.

All in all, an excellent place to stay in Old Palermo. Top hospitality, would return again.

Room Tip: Iris, which is quiet and with balcony.

We found this place through the Lonely Planet which described it as "charming and secluded guesthouse", which to our mind was totally misleading. The guesthouse was bland, and while the rooms had all mod cons, a good shower, tv (who needs it on holiday?) it was in no way charming, interesting, or "arty" (apart from the dreadful, poorly chosen artwork).

Unfortunately there were no rooms onto the courtyard, so we had a street facing room which was really noisy. Breakfast was a meager affair, with some underwhelming brioche, and some remarkably bad coffee. Once we decided that we didn't want to part with another 80€ for a night in this place, we went to check out, whereupon we found ourselves at the receiving end of the unpleasant front of house man who was insisting that we paid for the second night. He was rather rude about the whole thing, and when we mentioned that the breakfast was a below standard offering, we told us that "even the Americans didn't have a problem with their coffee!" Its a pity that he didn't handle the situation better, or I wouldn't be writing this. Whatever happened to the old adage, "the customer is always right."

There were cleanliness issues. We found a cockroach near our room. Although the bathroom has brand new fixtures, there is already a build up of mildew in the shower. Also, when we returned for our second night, it seemed that the bath towels that had been used in the morning had been folded and placed on top of my dirty suitcase, rather than left where they were hanging in the bathroom or replaced.

For a hotel which purports to be 3-star, Al Giardino is run way too informally:
(a) We arrived after 20:30 and the person manning reception insisted on taking our passports and not returning them until the next morning, without a clear explanation. Normally Italian hotels will take your passports off you for a few minutes...the maximum I've had to wait is 30 minutes, which is fine if you are settling int your room. Their insistence that we leave our passports overnight us very uncomfortable as we had to go out to dinner without valid ID.
(b) Although we had been assured that payment by card would be accepted, it was the cleaning lady (who didn't speak English) who attended to us for check-out. She tried to insist that only cash would be accepted, but when we rebutted this, she reluctantly got the card machine out. It was clear she had no idea how to operate it as she put my card in upside down. I ended up keying in the transaction myself. This was a waste of ten minutes.
(C) We left our suitcases during our last day and when we returned to claim them, we had to ring three times and waited several minutes until we were allowed in.

Finally, although the proprietress promises a "rich Mediterranean breakfast", the breakfast spread was more parsimonious than the other two places we had stayed at in Sicily. There were no fruits and I am pretty sure the coffee was microwave heated.

The B&B wasn't as amazing as all the reviews made it out to be. It is nice and the breakfast is OK, but the room was damp and smelly and the amenties could do with a bit of a revamp.
The reception is not staffed the hours they say it is and to get in touch with them it is a bit of a pain, and you feel like you're causing an inconvenience.
Still, it was acceptable for the 2 nights that we stayed.

We made a reservation with Al Giardino dell'Alloro and stayed in a sleek, modern room that I found later was on the B&B Centro Storico Hotel website (location and contact details of the two are the same so I'm guessing it's just two different wings). The guesthouse had lots of character - nice reception area with old furniture and a charming courtyard. Location-wise, it was wonderful being near a nice square, pedestrian street, some good bars and restaurants. Our room was on the small side, clean, comfortable with a nice big bed, television, and great bathroom. The only downside was a bit of noise from down the street from motorbikes and people. We tried to change to a quieter room but the room we wanted was not available then. The nicest thing was meeting Tommy, the receptionist cat. He is gorgeous and oh so friendly. Breakfast was quite nice and especially lovely if you get a seat in the courtyard. Overall, we found this a good boutique hotel and would stay here again, but in a different room next time.
