“'no options here anymore" - Palermo: a misunderstood city”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

I wanted to try to photograph the gritty side of this once great city, and BB22 placed me on the edge of Vucciria, La Kalsa and the centro storico. The hotel readily arranged for a taxi to meet me at the airport . The company is a husband and wife team , both of whom are friendly and informative, reassuring me that it was safe to wander in the areas i wished and that there would be no contact with the Cosa Nostra; in fact , perversley perhaps, they would ensure I was fine! The road from the airport has the famous 'No Mafia' sign, lit up at night close to the monument to the sadly departed anti-mafia judges Falcone and Borsellino. The hotel itself has few rooms but once inside one could be in Milan; cool and spacious accomodation, a roof top lounge and a wonderful hostess, Patrizia, and staff. 2 minutes from the hotel is La Rinascente, which like its sister stores in Milan, Florence etc has a wonderful alfresco restaurant on the roof serving the best mozzarella and views of the city to the mountains in the distance. Vucciria is decrepit but fascinating for being so. The smells can be a little ripe, the architecture still bomb-damaged from the 1940s, and the alleyways dark , but the people are friendly and one quickly loses any sense of danger . This area and others such as Borgo Vecchio are run down, they are not pretty. This is not Florence or Turin. It is a city just holding onto its past grandeur, but it merits your time and reflection. There is more colour in a single street in Palermo than the whole of Verona. And at the end of a long day walking the city , BB22 and a glass of vino rosso whilst reading a book about Italian style in the rooftop lounge nicely completes the day.

This was our first B&B @ Palermo and we were charmed by its stylish decor. The atmosphere just went hand and hand with the ambiance. Placed in historic Vuccira it was minutes away from famous and vidid Mercato della Vucciria ,it was a walking distance to the many sight seeing destinations.
There is a nice , neat and stylish little terrace on the top floor- by the managers office, where breakfast is served. There is a good spot to chill out in the mornings and afternoons and talk to other fellow travelers.
The owner is friendly, and the main manager ( I forgot the name sorry!) will tell you about the best "down to earth " local eateries- places you won't find in any guide book!
Free WiFi and baby cots ( if needed) available.

Really comfortable and very tastefully decorated Bed and Breakfast perfectly located at the heart of the old town of Palermo. The room was very quiet and the bed comfortable. We were well looked after by Patrizia, the owner and Emanuela. Thoroughly recommended!

Room Tip: We were very comfortable in the "Mandarina" room

We have just returned from 5 nights in BB 22 and we can thoroughly recommend it.
The location is perfect - in a lively, central and beautiful part of the city and yet so quiet - you feel isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The place is really stylish and yet is comfortable.
The owners and staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.
Great place!

The 3 flights of stairs were no issue for us but that is the only factor that we would point out as a consideration for some.

Room Tip: We had the balcony room which was great - really large and well furnished. The only shame for us wa...

We stayed here 5 nights and enjoyed slipping behind the church and several small streets to the unobtrusive door. For those who have enjoyed Marrakesh in this way, you'll know what I mean.

Great location for exploring the older parts of the city, but easy walk to the newer parts as well. The staff were helpful, sending a car to pick us up at the airport, and when we arrived, tired and jet-lagged at 8 in the evening, recommending a good restaurant just a few streets away. Breakfast was always pleasant. The room was pretty, with a balcony which we never seemed to use, but only because we were usually out exploring the city, or back taking an afternoon nap.
It was just right for us. Recommended.

Room Tip: You will hear dogs barking and the occasional motorcycle. It is a city.

beautiful B&B well hidden in a small street in Palermo old city center. every room is different and has beautiful design elements. Hosts are very friendly and have good tips for local restaurants and places to see. we will go back again in spring time to further discover this amazing city and will stay again in BB22.

Room Tip: all rooms are good, some of them with small balcony so ask for a room with balcony...

Our Easyjet flight was late into Palermo and we were pleased to see that the pick up arranged by the owners was still there waiting for us. And this begins to describe the extent to which the owners of BB22 take what they do seriously.

The journey in from the airport was filled with animated conversation about why no one takes the trains, how if you follow the crowd you will find the best places to eat and drink and which beach was best during the week.

The car ride zoomed by as we began to see the buildings, piazzas and shops that characterise beautiful Palermo. At the end of a narrow street BB22 came into view. The code entered, supplied in email by our hosts, and a satisfying click later we were in a cool, in both senses of the word, interior of dark marble floors and whitewashed walls.

Our room had a note pinned to be door welcoming us and inviting us to breakfast the next morning. We dumped our bags and carried on upstairs to the reception to find it deserted but welcoming with lights lefts on, fridge with cold beverages and an air conditioned terrace to relax on.

Free wifi made it easy to connect home and we sat and stretched out on the sofas. Breakfast on the terrace would be nice.

Our room was impressive with a standalone bath, a nice big bed, our own terrace for lounging and plenty of storage for our stuff. It wasn't quite the room we were expecting and as a result a bottle of wine appeared the next day with a note apologising. Again things taken seriously.

Breakfast was continental and exquisite, more information about what to see and do: lots of smiles, hand gestures and Sicilian flair. Very nice.

We had three days exploring the city before moving on further east across the island but I would heartily recommend BB22 as a place to dip your toe into daily Sicilian life.
