“A good hotel”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

The Mercure Palermo Centro is a typical Mercure hotel, located close to the Politeama and the main shopping street. The rooms are rather big and some have huge balconies. The interior is nice and the breakfast is good. There are only two things that keep me from giving five points:
1) There is no WiFi in the rooms and internet via cable in the room is incredibly expensive (10€ per day). However, there are to MACs in the lobby that are free to use.
2) The coffee in the morning was terrible, it was some kind of instant coffee from a machine. It was by far the worst coffee I ever had in Italy (that means it is still better than some coffees I had around the world, but standards in Italy are just higher when it comes to coffee).

Room Tip: On the third floor, rooms have an incredibly huge balcony.

The hotel is everything a family needs. Wifi is available only at the lobby area. The kitchen/restaurant personel is great. Breakfast is very good. Only bad thing was the restaurants that the reception suggested. (When they see you are tourists they charge an extra 3 euro per person that they called"sitting fee". And the receptionists themselves are a bit unfriendly . For instance they did not allow to order pizza at the hotel. We could not understand why. Anyway we had a great stay, everyone speaking english, we would definitely stay there again. Enjoy.

Central but not noisy, clean, comfortable beds, acceptable breakfast, friendly staffs and professonal in the norm; for work it was ideal. No restuarants but there's a wonderful family run osteria around the corner and a supermarket two streets down.
For vacation though, I'd opt for for more classical or local places with palermitan flavour.

I stayed here with two friends but had my own room. The room was adequate and the bathroom a good size. It was clean and the only letdown for me was the poor air conditioning system which was off more than it was on. When I complained one day I was told they were working on it and it would be back on in an hour. However, for the week I was there, it was very intermittent and I could feel the difference when I stepped out in the hallwayit worked perfectly. It was very hot that week and so it was warm in the room without air con.and diifficult to sleep

Breakfast was plentiful except for the bacon and scramble eggs which seemed always to be scarce. Staff were not helpful at first but after attempts to speak in Italian they were very helpful, courteous and very genial. My friends and I were very impressed with gorgeous Antonio the smiling barman who was so sweet and efficient. The hotel is very near the main road, the Via Rosa which runs through Palermo centre, There were many good restaurants and Trattorias nearby .An excellent location but not the usual Mercure standard.

Going to Mondello beach is a musts about 20 mins by taxi and also Cefalu, an hour away by train which is full of interesting buildings, shops and lovely bars and restaurants near the beach. Monreale with its beautiful church and atmospheric piazza is well worth a visit. The Sicilian people are warm and welcoming and very honest. We had a lovely time.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter and I would have given a higher rating if the air con had been efficient.

Good location. Parking 16 euros a day in an underground garage opposite that has someone there, so it is safe. Parking is otherwise hard in Palermo with locals pointing out spots for you. Seems dodgy to leave a car parked in the street when people know you are a tourist. Nothing spectacular but a good hotel. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Room clean and good size. Shower leaked a bit but no big deal. would recommend as a good place to be based in the city. Catacombs about 20/30 minute walk.

Was there for business and unfortunately paid everything upfront and could not escape. My room (I believe it was a single standard) was simply appalling: small size (in contrast the bathroom was bigger, this is not a joke), dirty, the walls were filthy too, the A/C was not working, the LAN cable to surf the web (for a fee of course!) was so short that I had to work on the bed rathere than the desk. One day I asked for someone to try and fix the LAN problem but they had just ignored me.
The staff were useless indeed.
To be honest my colleague's room looked much better -at least it was big enough to be called "room" and not "hole" like mine- but he had problems too like poor A/C and dirty sheets. His bathroom was always wet as when he had a shower it was impossile to stop the water going on the floor.
Last but not least if you are driving this hotel is not going to be your favourite pick: right in front of the building there is a "divieto di sosta e di fermata"signal which simply means that you are not allowed the car nor stop it (we did it as we had luggage and risked to be fined).

Our room in general was okay, we had a deluxe room on the first floor but it seemed the only difference was 2 single beds had been pushed together to make a large double. Our whole 4 night stay there was let down by the fact that the room was not sound proof (and that our window liked to burst open on it's own accord) and so being right above the kitchen and next to a busy street outside meant trying to get a lie in between the breakfast hours of 6 and 10 was nearly impossible. The rooms were very clean and the maids and catering staff were friendly but the main receptionists came across as very disinterested and after asking on more than one occasion for our room safe to be looked at we ended up just carrying our valuables around with us. Palermo would be fine for a short stay and maybe for older couples but we found it difficult to occupy ourselves and on more than one occasion ended up in the local burger king due to lack of nice restaurants in the area.
