Service was mediocre and so was the food. Spaghetti marinara was flavourless and the calzone was undercooked. Good location but disappointing and poor value.

Nice location in the center of Palermo but not the place to go with a large group. The tables were too close together and the noise level made it hard to hear your own table mates. The food was average, mostly fish and pizza but lacking in great Sicilian flavor. The service was rushed and not too friendly, but we were with a large group.

The multi-lingual Head Waiter was a pushy type with his eye on the bill and the tip from the start. His welcome was flamboyantly effusive and he was keen to press onto us what a character he was. He attempted to railroad me into accepting an off-menu "specially prepared" starter of hams and cheeses. His overbearingly friendly attitude became distinctly unfriendly when we refused and insisted on our original choice. We did not see him again until the bill came.

It is easy to tell you what was wrong with the food we received: The house red wine was unpalatable. The busiate con le sarde was terribly salty with formless fishy pieces and the pizza was soggy.

Having had some wonderful meals in Palermo we regret choosing this restaurant. We felt that the attempt to push a dessert on us "just to try, no charge" was designed to make it hard for us to complain, question the bill or leave without tipping. We settled the bill as presented to us with no tip, and tried to leave quickly. We were held up at the locked door while the Head Waiter asked for another 10 euros on top of the 30 we had paid. He claimed that the bill had been wrongly calculated. Indeed it had. We pointed out we had already been overcharged for 2 items and left with a horrible taste in our mouths that wasn't all down to the disgusting food.

Try Trattoria Biondo, a 5 minute walk away. It is a little more expensive but welcoming and the food was immeasurably better.

You know what it’s like to arrive early evening in a city that you know, are hungry but don’t want to rush to your favourite restaurant. So you begin to look at some that you might fancy and the more you discover the harder he choice becomes. We had arrived in Palermo and were in just such a situation; so many looked OK but nothing grabbed the attention. We returned to one though and the man in the doorway asked if we would like to step inside. Normally this is for us an invitation to move on but something about the place seemed to fit the bill.
It proved to be a modern place with a view into the kitchen, music just loud enough to be acceptable without being intrusive. The man who invited us in was the head waiter, who said that he could speak six languages.
We had a shared starter of aubergine, tomato and cheese and for the second course, in my case grilled shrimps and in my wife’s case pasta in sardine pesto. They were both excellent.
So nice was the experience that two days later we returned. The place was much quieter but we were a little early. The meal was even better as we had an aubergine starter, my wife calamari fritte served in a witty foil wrap and I orata which was one of the best that I have eaten as it had a lovely peppery taste.
After coffee we were brought two complimentary glasses of the strongest most concentrated Marsala that I have ever drunk. Up to this point the conversation between us had all been in Italian, but when the Marsala came the gentleman went into fluent French. As my knowledge of French consists of four words, yes, no, thank you and love this was all a bit lost on me.
We were very impressed with Vino e Pomodoro, perhaps not the place for a real special occasion but as a place for freshly cooked food, pleasant service in a lively atmosphere it is to be highly recommended.

We got there late afternoon (3.30) on New Year's Eve (4 of us) as they were just finishing lunch service to get ready for their New Year Gala Dinner. They were happy to serve us and happy for us to 'phone our other 7 friends to come and join us. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and drink and how they accommodated us even though we must have been a bit of an inconvenience to them at that time of day.
