Owner description: This cathedral was started in 1185 by the norman archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio. You can visit the Royal and Imperial tomb of Frederik the II, the urn with the relics of the patron Saint of Palermo Santa Rosalia, plus a treasury with a precious medieval crown and a crypt from the VII century. The church is free to enter, there is a ticket to access the monumental area composed by royal tombs, treasury, crypt and the roof.

As our guide says it is a mix of styles.Wonderful the outside, the inside is ,instead, deceiving, but once you are there I suggest you to visit the royal sarcophagus

“A bit of a mess”

I love ornate baroque churches but found this one hard to handle. The outside is a strange collection of styles and the inside seemed dark and gloomy. San Salvatore nearby is a far better place to visit.

“Check your times ....”

Stunning exteriior, a real mix of so many styles. Inside try to plan you visit around services, and events. If you overlap it feels awkward walking around inside whilst services are being conducted, also the tombs of ten kings will be closed and also the small museum, Sunday's are pretty well a no go...... As you would expect....

“Stunning”

A very striking building with a beautiful interior. The piazza in front of the cathedral is a real sun-trap, and can become seriously hot, although the cathedral remains comfortable inside. Visit the crypt with the tombs of the bishops. Even cooler.
