We were looking forward to visiting this museum. The Lonely Planet guide indicated it is open from 8:30 - 6:00pm. Only thing they didn't mention was closing for lunch. Staff were sitting inside but completely disinteresed when we tried to get in. As we had a plane to catch later in the day we had to miss it. Some parts of Italy are still to understand the value of the tourist dollar!

Like so many places in Palermo, closed for restoration. No serious idea of when it might reopen (though they say sometime in 2012 - wouldn't place bets on it). Has an astonishing collection, which you will have to see in books for the moment...

When visiting Palermo in September 2011, I was disappointed to learn that the Museo archeological Regionale was closed for renovation. I'm not sure how long. I look forward to an opportunity to return to Palermo one day to see this site.

Like many things in Palermo, the Archaeological Museum could use an infusion of euros to bring its displays up to date. That's not to say that it doesn't contain some real treasures. Do some research before you go regarding the Metopes of Selinunte, and the Sicilian 'Rosetta' stone, etc. Not much info is available at the Museum . There is a beautiful 16th C. fountain with a statue of Triton on the main floor in the cloisters. On UTube you can find a 3D reconstruction of Temple C at Selinunte from which many of the best exhibits come. Fascinating!
