You don't really have to speak Italian to understand what is going on and to enjoy this theatre tradition (the woman next to me insisted on translating it into German almost word for word throughout the performance for her friend). The magic of the puppets so carries you along that when the puppeteers appear at the end you can't understand what these huge giants are who have suddenly appeared. Punch and Judy has been politically corrected in the uk to erase all violence but no such nonsense here! The 2 rows of small children at the front were spellbound, as were the grown-ups sitting behind.

So beautiful to see at night....the opera house in Palermo featured in the last scenes of Godfather III.

We hadn't booked, just showed up on spec at six for a six-thirty performance and just managed to get a seat. I guess in the high season it would be necessary to book. We were in the second from the back row and the view isn't great to be honest, had to sit with my head very much sideways throughout the performance. The people in the backrow sat up on the back of the bench which no-one stopped them from doing and seemed like a good idea. I really enjoyed the performance, and although it is clearly pretty visual, I definitely benefitted from understanding Italian - my partner still enjoyed it though. We were both glad for these reasons that it wasn't an overly long performance - 45 minutes, so good value for money but not long enough for me to get a crick in my neck or my partner to get a bit bored. Some of the foreign tourist audience were a bit grumpy, 'shushing' the (young) kids at the front who were clearling getting into to it. You are not allowed to take photos throughout the performance. I found the puppets were more of a spur to my trying to get a grips with Sicilian history in terms of who the kings and princes were, who Ruggiero II was, what was the relationship with the Holy Roman Empire, what was the Holy Roman Empire exactly etc
