We spent 2 nights here at the end of September - at the end of 2 weeks in N W Sicily, and I have to say it was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.
Sure, it's a bit past its best, and has seen better days, but that only added to its charms for me, as I hate ultra modern, steel & glass hotels.
The public areas were amazing - very opulent, the room was very good, and the staff were very pleasant, efficient and helpful without being 'in your face'.
And I got a very good price online by booking a month in advance, so all in all very well pleased.

Maybe they could make a bit more of their long history though, maybe by giving out some info/leaflets in the rooms.
One of the city sightseeing tours actually passed the hotel, and told us quite a lot about it!

Right in the centre of scruffy Palermo a gem of preserved opulence. We felt like spending the whole city break hiding inside the public areas of this hotel. Beautiful gilded mirrors, marbles, statues...
Breakfast was slightly disappointing, lots of choice but nothing too good (they could have local delicious bombe alla crema and cornetti instead of tiny cornetti).
The restaurant was not open at the time of our visit.
The place felt a little understaffed and tired, however we lacked nothing, very polite and helpful staff.
It was refreshing to see local employees rather than underpaid foreigners.

Room Tip: Our 4th floor room was quite large, high ceilings and nice big bed. Very quiet.

We booked the Grand Hotel Des Palmes as this is supposed to be one of the best hotels in Palermo and promotes itself as a "Luxe" location. We were very disapointed, our first room was small with scuffed and dirty walls, damp coming through and carpets so dirty they looked like they belonged in a train station waiting room. We complained and were imediatly told there there were no other rooms so we became more stridents on the issues and we were then given a suite which was a bit better but the carpets were still a disgrace. The reception staff were unhelpful when asked about travel to and from the open air opera and although the breakfast was very nice, on our last morning we were ignored by the staff for the local business men and were not brought or even offered coffee which broke the camels back. We will not return.

"Victorian" refers to united Italy's first king Vittorio Emmanuele, of course!

We spent the first day of our Sicilian holiday here and liked it so much, we booked for fhe final night as well.

A wonderful, opulent "old-school" grand hotel full of antiques, statues, stained glass, parquet - the works. Richard Wagner stayed here - even if you are not particularly fond of his music one must amire his taste and lifestyle!

Very attentive and helpful staff; it does help if you speak Italian, though. Reception staff was particularly efficient. The concierge too - if you found him (after all, we are in Sicily).

The location is brilliant, you can get to anywhere in this beautiful town by walking. Rooms are fantastic, we stayed in two different ones: Very spacious, very comfortable, very quiet and furnished - partly - with exquisite antiques. Also, you get all the trimmings and fittings you would expect in a 4-star establishment.

The breakfast room is breathtaking, period chandeliers and mirrors all around. Breakfast buffet is good, too, although sometimes staff a little slow in re-stocking.

We didn't dine in the hotel's restaurant but we had drinks in the cozy little bar. When we wanted to pay for our Negronis, however, the barkeeper had disappeared (after all, we are in Sicily here). We then told reception that we owed them two cocktails but they didn't make us pay, I guess for accounting reasons. Even on check-out, they wouldn't let me pay, so I still owe the Grand Hotel et des Palmes two drinks.

The hotel has no own parking spaces but you can drop your key at reception and they park your car in a garage nearby for € 12 per night.

Two small things I didn't like: 1. There is a Swisscom Internet point in the lobby and it works well but is ridiculously expensive. 2. Many of the walls are decorated with enlarged laser copies of old etchings of Sicily, this looks a bit cheap in this otherwise splendid Belle-Epoque environment.

Interesting fact: Difficult to explain but the Grand Hotel et des Palmes (I admit I quite like this slightly absurd name) is not listed in the 2011 Guide Michelin for Italy.

Room Tip: The rooms on the southern side of the hotel have little balconies, it you get outside and look left...

on arrival on late Saturday night we were shown one of the smallest and least attracive rooms. After insisting we were grudgingly offered a better room. The next day my wife was not feeling very well and rather than having dinner at the hotel I asked for some fruit and bread roles. All we received were some "coolroom" apples and oranges while strawberries, cherries and peaches were in full season. Reception staff attitude was arrogant and unwelcome. Bathroom was second rate. All in all a very disappointing experience.

This hotel is not about having all modern facilities at your fingertips, if anything the first impression is of a shabby chic. However, the hotel is homely and relaxed, while still preserving something of the old Palermo. This is the place to go for its marble statues and guidling, to have breakfast under a huge chandelier and try and discover some of its past stories. Staff were wonderful - I had instant help with openning my suitcase which I locked and lost the key, the reception staff were happy to answer our questions about Palermo transport every single morning and the barman in the hotel bar was very friendly and had some wonderful drink creations.
This is one of those places where you can go again and again, because it is homely and reassuring. Any place that invests enough can have the latest luxuries, Grand Hotel et Des Palmes has more than that - a really easy going charm, friendliness and character.
The location is great - you will be safely out of the madness of the old town while near enough, and it is near some of the best restaurants which is very convenient especially in the evenings.

My friend and I really enjoyed our two nights here. It was clean, our towels were replaced the morning after we arrived and the bed was very comfortable.

The continental breakfast was of a fair standard. There were many breads and pastries to choose from but the cooked items - such as eggs and bacon - were cold both mornings.

However, the things to do and see in Palermo are a bit of a walk away. Unfortunately the weekend we stayed it was very cold and wet which made this distance a bit of a problem.

While the room itself was reasonably priced, before we checked out my friend and I ordered two teas and this cost us 12 euros. Even in Rome you wouldn't expect to pay this much for tea.

I would definitely stay at the Grand Hotel et des Palmes again but I would not be paying for any beverages!
