During a week in Sicily this was not only the best restaurant we found but, astonishingly, the least expensive. Perhaps tellingly, we came here on a recommendation from a local.

The food is traditional but interesting and a world away from the predictable pasta-by-the-numbers offerings of so many other restaurants on the island. So it's a chance to try out some dishes you probably won't have heard of before. Service was friendly and helpful.

We also found this by accident when we went to a pizzeria that was closed at lunch time--the fried calamari, bolognese pasta, squid ink pasta were so amazing we kept eating even as we were full. Its hard to find, but definitely a must go if youre looking for a local experience!

Found this by accident when we were looking for a pizzeria which was closed at lunchtime and recommended we came here instead. First impressions weren't encouraging - we were almost the only ones in there at 1.15pm, there was no price list, just a menu written on a small white board. 20 minutes later the place was full of locals. The atmosphere was very special: it is obviously Palermo football club mad with lots of old photos and shirts on the walls. also some nice old film posters. We had some very good and very filling pasta with beer and coffee, We thought it was going to be cheap but it surprised us all by coming in at 19 Euros for three people! They even refused a tip! We will definitely try to come back here when next in the city.

Turned up at 830 on a Saturday night when the large restaurant was entirely empty and were turned away rather taciturnly as we hadn't booked. Went round the corner to the excellent Ristortante Ferro and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Despite having another week in Palermo, don't think we'll bother La Rosa Nero with our custom. Manners, and perhaps an offer to book for another evening, may have swayed our opinion, but in Palermo where we're finding it and to have a bad meal, restaurants need to vie for business and not treat potential customers in such an offhand manner.

Amazing restaurant. Was recommended by Sicilians as the place to go and eat authentic cuisine. Fresh local produce cooked beautifully; good selection of dishes to choose from menus which change daily.

My boyfriend eats meat and I have recently started eating fish. The menu was in Italian so we didn't really know where to start and asked the waiter to choose for us. He picked brilliantly.

Primis were splendid, my involtini was possibly the nicest Italian food I have eaten, aubergine stuffed with soft breadcrumbs, cheese and herbs; the pork salad was also delicious. Second and third courses were equally as good - pork, potato and saffron stew on pasta; fried kings prawns; pea, leek and butter spaghetti and meatballs. Great atmosphere and staff. All this, with bread, wine and water for 33 Euros. Excellent value & highly recommended.
