The streets of the market stalls are brisk and busy, bustling and rather invigorating, and authentic, but the general atmosphere is a sad one of fallen glory. Unreconstructed World War Two damage dominates the scene, overall, and one gets a sense of an heroic getting-on-with-things in pretty grim circumstances.

We visited during February, with virtually no tourists, just Palermitani doing their shopping. In the meat/fish area of the market we saw a very freshly slaughtered lamb ready to be dressed, the head of a very large swordfish lying on the cobblestones and various animal parts I hadn't seen in years on display. Of course, there's the fresh fruit and vegetables but if you're staying somewhere where you can cook up some of this protein you'll have a blast.

it was nice to wonder around this market, the fruit and veg are amoungst the cheapest I've seen in italy and looked good quality. there were only men around which could be a bit uncomfortable, but I had nobody bothering me. a nice place to shop or just watch the others!

A very long street lined up with stalls selling all the local produces, fish sea food, meats, cheeses and fruits. Colourful and fun, go before 2pm, although many stalls are opened after 2.

To stroll through this market gives one a wonderful, authentic and local feeling, which is one of the things i allways strive to find, when i travel. Here you defintely get it all.
It's loud, caotic, colourful and just an experience not to miss.
