The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. They were attentive to detail and the rooms were cleaned every day. My 4 nights stay was very enjoyable. I strongly recommend this hotel. The staff spoke English and French. The rooms had air condition and the bathroom was spacious and clean. Breakfast was continental but more than adequate.

Very good location and facilities. The hotel has an exceptional staff willing to help with anything at hand, they speak English, Italian, Spanish, are friendly and very well trained to assist guests -- excellent service in every aspect that makes you feel home and secure. Breakfast was excellent, internet connection fast and reliable, all clean, it is a refurbished building which puts this hotel in better conditions than any other 3 stars I have been in. Will return on my next visit to Palermo !

The road (lane) to the hotel may make you worry but don't be. You enter a different world when you open the hotel door. The hotel is clean and if you want a base simply to sleep in, then this does it perfectly. The staff were extremely helpful to all my questions on where to go or to find this or that. The breakfast was more than suitable for our needs but you may find it not as extensive as some you may have become use to. There were no tea making facilities in our room or a fridge, so if you are use to making your own drink, go prepared and only buy UHT type milk. Ok, so the local area could get noisy at night and elements of the room were not perfect but we were prepared and took this all on board as part and parcel of a staying in a large city in a hotel of this style.

I recommend that you explore the many lanes around Palermo as well as the main streets. The best time to shop is between 1800-2000 when the main streets come alive. Via Maqueda and Via Roma and travelling north from Central Station are best areas to shop. Begging has many forms from out right cup in hand to trying to sell you an umbrella or magnate or at Ballaro market, selling in a car boot style, what can only be described as rubbish not fit for the bin. Poverty in its purest form. We found the city in general to be very dirty, dilapidated and the traffic something to get use to (do be very careful and see if you can spot a vehicle with no dent or scrape!). This is all part of the reason for exploring different countries and cultures, so lap it up. There is a church or three in every road, alley or square and some are even in use! The architecture of every building is magnificent and spans many centuries and cultures. The restaurants that the hotel staff recommended all turned out ok and I should imagine that every restaurant does a good meal. However, do not expect good manners, smiles or helpful service from the waiters (mainly a male issue) as it appears that they are doing YOU a service and you are just in the way. Ok, this is only our view and of every establishment we ate in. Do visit Monreale and Mondello and use the bus for only 1.3 Euro each way. We found that the food and drink was not as expensive as we were expecting and our best meal was a 3 course for only 15 Euros each and included 1/2 lt wine or 1 lt of water.

In all, do visit and do use this hotel.

The Hotel Columbia is a real gem. Tucked away on a little side street in the heart of Palermo, you could not wish for a better hotel at a budget price. The rooms were spacious and clean, the beds were very comfortable and the staff could not be more helpful. It also helped that breakfast was served until 10:30, so it doesn't matter if you have the odd late night, as you undoubtedly will in Palermo. I would highly recommend this hotel to my friends.
