“Outdated Lonely Planet”
Reviewed May 2, 2012

When arriving in Catania one evening we taxied to a recommended hotel from my 2004 Lonely planet only to find that it was no longer an hotel ! Luckily the very kind owner of the building took us around the corner to Gresi Hotel in Via Pacini. This street is a small street that runs off the main Via Etnea.Entering through a rather ordinary facade and into a lift we found that we were in a renovated 'palazzo' with the most amazing painted ceilings and art-clad walls.
We were able to book in at 60 euro a night including continental breakfast and after following the manager, who literally bounded up the stairs with both our weighty cases,we were in a spacious, clean room with a wardrobe, case holder AND a hairdryer in the bathroom.
The helpful staff and great coffee with breakfast added to a really great stay.
Catania is a great place to base yourself in Sicily as the bus and trains are close and a trip to Taormina is just a short train ride away.

Room Tip: No noise problen as the hotel is in a quiet street.

My plane landed late at night and although the 457 bus was still running I failed to find the bus stop at the airport and so took a taxi. Quoted about 20 euros but the meter read 30 euros after a circuitous journey. Typical!. The 457 bus to the airport and station comes down Via Etnea and there is a bus stop only a few metres from the hotel. The service runs every 20 minutes.
I was made welcome at the hotel although not all the staff speak English. My single room was adequate and the bed comfortable. However the furnitutre and wallpaper looked a little dated. It took me quite a time to find the main switch for the air conditioner but then the air conditioner worked fine. There was also a fridge which I found rather hoisy and a safe which had no instructions is any language. The shower was excellent and hot at all times of day and night.
Breakfast was a croisant, a glass of juice and a yoghurt but they did refill my coffee cup on request.
If you walk out of the reception area onto the balcony you can see the summit of Mount Etna. It was not erupting but was steaming profusely. There was no wi-fi but several excellent and reasonably priced internet cafés nearby. If you arrive late at night then you may find that Via Pacini looks a little daunting but there is no cause for alarm. After about nine o clock they close the main outer wooden door but you only have to press a communication button as the reception desk is staffed for 24 hours a day. There are several pastry shops in the area and plenty of restaurants.
I had booked in for four nights but stayed another two. The cost was 45 euros per night and I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms backing onto the courtyard are quieter

Nice big rooms with working air condition, hot water etc. Check-in is on the 3rd floor which was different and the place is a maze of staircases, but it's a wonderful starting point just off the main restaurant/ commercial strip. Would definitely return.

Stayed five nights in this hotel. Location is super in the centrum and busstops near. Because it's in a sideway, no noise problems. Room was ok, design a bit above average. Personnel was correct but some of them seem to be indifferent. Breakfast is like everywhere in Italy: a little bread (cornetto/croissant), yoghurt and coffee/tea

Stayed one night after a late arrival in Catania. Room basic but clean and comfortable. Surprisingly quiet for city centre hotel. Very convenient for airport bus - there is a bus stop less than 5 minutes walk away (ask bus driver for Hotel Gresi)

Ended up here after Hotel Etnea 316 refused our confirmed reservation. This was a family-run hotel with friendly service. Rooms were a bit dated but clean and comfortable with fully adequate facilities. It is well-located and relatively quiet.
