Owner description: The "Allied Landings in Sicily Museum" (Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943) is housed in one of the buildings forming the "Ciminiere" cultural centre. The museum narrates the events that took place in Sicily from 10 July to 8 September 1943. This period is still recent history, only seventy years have passed and many senior citizens can still recount the experience. Everything that we have forgotten is now conserved in this museum which aims to protect our most precious asset: peace. The museum is arranged on three floors covering an area of 3,000 square metres, including a temporary exhibition area. By means of reconstructed settings the museum has tried to recreate the conditions of life before, during and after the war, using simulations, projections and original exhibits.

Take a break from food & ruins...visit this war museum in Cantania. I'm not usually keen on museums but this one touched me, I had an uncle killed in this war & another who was a POW. The interpretive panels were excellent. The experience in a bomb shelter complete with flickering lights & it shaking brought a tear as I felt the fear of those who endured this time in history. The end was extremely moving, a naked bronze of a soldier laying in state with individual names of the fallen (on a loop) projected on a screen. Go if you can.

The museum is much bigger than I thought it would be , and very well laid out. It gives a impressive feeling of the battle of Sicily in 1943.
I found the whole experience very moving , as my father was involved in Operation Husky in 1943.
Its well worth taking the trouble to find this museum

This is a brilliantly connived and executed military museum covering the story of the battle for Sicily from the point of view of the Allies, the Germans and the Sicilians themselves. It has first class exhibits imaginatively presented. It has much of the panache and style of the Piana delle Orme museum at Latina, with but a little bit more academic input.

This museum is a bit out of the centre of Catania but is really worth visiting if you are interested in history. It is mainly in Italian but there is also quite a bit of signage in English.

Took my family today and spent a good hour and a half going through. Starts with a movie, then a short stay in a period bomb shelter during one of the allied bombing raids. Not earth shattering, but pretty cool. Lots of period footage being shown during the walking tour and lots of uniforms, artillery, guns, etc. Great experience for a history buff and kids. Not too long and plenty of information.
