It's a nice long winding drive to the car park and well worth it. But to get near the volcano summit becomes expensive with the cable car and then a bus.

We were on holiday in Sicily and thought that it was an unmissable opportunity to visit a live volcano. The trip up by bus took about two hours but the landscape at the top was worth it. The craters are stupendous and the hills of black lava are like nothing I have seen anywhere else. It looked like an alien planet or possibly Mordor. The tour guide Alfredo was loquacious in two languages and the food in the restaurants at 2000m was pretty good. We only went that high but it is possible to take a cable car and jeep to near the summit for an extra 50 Euros per person. As a family of four that wasn't worth it for us and you can probably see everything you want (craters, lava etc) at 2000m anyway.

We went on a Carnival cruise ship excursion. Very professionally run, nice lunch on the way and good transportation. It was interesting to see the vegetation changes as you make the long (close to one hour) climb up to the 2000 meter level of the volcano. Once up there, it is possible to walk around one of many different craters. It almost looks like you are on the surface of the Moon it is very barren. There are also cable cars to take one higher to the 2900 meter level but we did not do that. Excellent view of the area from the level we were at. Highly recommend it was a nice day.

This is a super cool volcano, but I'm not that gaga over them so the $35/pp fee to go up an old cable car to see some black stuff and a closer view of the mountain was a bit steep. It was a pretty clear day so we caught some great glimpses of the volcano between cloud covers. There was also some snow. Dress warmly - I was fine in jeans and a sweatshirt, but it was a warmer day. There are TONS of ladybugs, so I felt like I was walking around land mines at times. We felt that we could have just hung out at the bottom, looked at the free crater and had just about the same experience.
