Trattoria Il Mare served the best and most plentiful seafood we have had in Sicily. The menu itself is so expansive we had to rely on our waiter's suggestion, and it worked out great. He did not disappoint us. We "split" an antipasti whch was several plates of anchovies, swordfish, squid, shrimp, oysters, mussels and on an on. It could have been a meal in itself.

The main dish was a fish prepared tableside and dressed with tomatoes, olives and who knows what else. These people know how to prepare seafood. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food served. They are very nice people too, and I can highly recommend Trattoria Il Mare.

During our 4 day stay in Sicily we ate at this restaurant twice - once at lunchtime and then the following evening. The pasta dish I had easily scores as one of the tastiest things I have eaten ever (a tagliatelle type pasta with swordfish). The first time we went for lunch, the place appeared to be closed, but wasn't, so be aware that it may not be obvious that the place is there (as another reviewer commented). In the evening, the place was busy, the waiting staff were very friendly and helpful, and the little girl who was helping out was a nice touch!

The set menu is very good value - a LOT of food will end up on your plate, so come hungry or go a la carte. The local wine is also extraordinarily cheap and perfectly drinkable - I would definitely recommend it!

This is not a place for a romantic dinner however - it is a proper family place, very bright, and the "decor" is a bit shabby, but in a way that adds to the charm. You can also expect to sit more or less on the same table as others, and we got chatting (sort of) to some very friendly locals. So steer clear if you want an intimate dinner for two, but go there if you fancy trying something which seems very genuine and local.

We ate twice at Il Mare during a recent week in Catania and liked it so much I hesitated about doing this review because I wouldn't want it to become too well-known. The food - we had only fish or seafood, plus pudding once - was delicious and simply but well presented, and the service was friendly without being gushing. Lovely seafood pasta dishes. Twice we had fish baked in the oven and expertly filleted at our table, but in a non-flashy way. Someone has complained about the menu quoting price per kilo for fish but this is quite common in southern Europe and there is a guide as to the average size of a portion. Beware of the bread and breadsticks: if you're hungry on arrival they're so good it's easy to lay into them with reckless abandon - and regret it later. The decor may be a bit basic but the atmosphere was good and I'm there for the food not the curtains or chandeliers. An excellent, value for money find.

The concierge at our hotel recommended this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Wonderful fresh seafood cooked with flair. Would love to return if I'm in the neighborhood. Also very reasonable.
