Owner description: Walk along the floor of this 223-foot deep lava canyon - a narrow, scenically spectacular gorge carved out of the rock by a fast-flowing stream.

I read the reviews before going here and must agree that it is over priced and that the free access point is the way to go. We did the body surfing option and found although it was fun it was too expensive and we were not able to actually go up far enough into the gorge. We basically got to float the pools, falls and rapids below the gorge. If I was going again I would walk in and swim in the pools and take a picnic lunch and save my money. The scenery is very nice and if you have a free day it is a cool place to see but don't make a special trip. Perhaps it is better at other times of the year but it felt over hyped and was a slight let down.....Go to Cavagrande Cassible instead.

My husband and I visited the gorge after a trip to Mount Etna, on our way back to Taormina. We paid 8 euro to get in each, but thought it would be worth it. Access to the gorge is by lift or stairs, we took the former.

The gorge is pretty with clear water running through, which is refreshing but quite chilly. After a sunbathe we wandered up the river and found some stairs to climb up to the top. His took us to a different entry point which is actually free.

A bit annoyed we'd missed this entrance we tried to make the most of our entry to ticket and enjoy the walks included in the ticket. It turns out most of the other attractions and walking trails were closed!! We felt a bit duped and thought ait wasn't worth 8 euro each.

Our advice is to use the free steps which are 100m to the right of the main advertised entrance (as long as you can manage the stairs).

Our advice to those running the site; don't close the pathways that make it worth paying the money to get in and if you are charging people to get in at least use the money wisely to clear up the rubbish in the gorge left by irresponsible tourists!

Very short, but beautiful walking tour beside the river, looking down on it. The reward that you get after it - a dip in the cold river. Relaxes you right away.

the alcantara gorge is one of the only rivers they have in sicily. we went there with a local who told us we gonna spend the day at a "river"...little did we know!
if you are there on your own then take the public entrance to the canyon. if you want to be a bit adventurous then find a path on your own like we did. i think it was made for/by goats . quite challenging but so much fun and rewarding. wear sturdy shoes! watch out for wild blackberries, fig and plum trees along the way. you'll have you lunch literally on the go :)
once you gotten down take your shoes off and have fun climbing around the humongous rocks. they have all kinds of shapes and around every bend you discover something new.
the water is very cold as it comes straight from the top of the etna. be careful at a couple spots where the water gets really fast. some parts are quite calm and also suitable for children.
i recommend walking down a bit further away from the "touristy"area, you reward will be just the sound of water rushing by, amazingly beautiful spots and all kinds of fruit trees growing in-between the rocks.
i'd take this over any city or typical tourist spot!

You might want to take the free entrance 150 m. west of main entrance. 220 steps down you will meet a great view.

Rocky formation looks almost fake, but it's just the water making them smooth and shiny. Small waterfalls makes it look romantic, beautiful and bringing in adventure. You can scale the waterfalls.
Don't spend money on body surfing, waders or any planned activities - unless you are afraid of cold water or like "team activities". The water was appr. 15 degress (like the ocean in Denmark) and we all went swimming, body surfing and walking along the river for hours without spending a cent. The nature itself provide fun and happiness. The rocks are perfect for sun tanning and getting warm again.
Pure nature, pretty, adventure, challenge..... great place to go and spend an afternoon with teens
