One should visit these Gole in Summer and take a dip in the water.Make sure to take a pair of plastic sandles with you

The place is beautiful l and interesting. But be careful - there is a public acces to it, you don't have to buy ticket to get there. You have to find an entrance to the public beach (about 80 steps going down).
We planned to buy a walk up the river (in special waterproof trousers) but in September 2011 it wasn't possible. But still they sold tickets to show you what you can see from the public beach.

As a visit, you should only really plan for an hour or so. The small walk along the top does give you some impressive views of the gorge but is only 30 mins max, and the water being only around 10 degrees means that you don't want to stay in it very long, so don't think this is a full day trip. Combined with an agriturismo nearby for lunch this becomes an outstanding venue and well worth the trip. The rock structure is amazing and it's just a beautiful place to spend some time.

We visited Alcantara in the afternoon. It was really beautiful. What we didn't find out before was that we could have spent the whole day there exploring . There's lots of adventures we could have taken if we had more time, but the few hours we had were simply amazing. The water was freezing under our feet but inviting as it was so hot that day.I recommend this place to anyone visiting Sicily. Don't forget to take your bathing costume as the waters tend to get higher if taking the walking trip, and of course your camera!

Early June-the "water" route was closed and the walk along the viewpoint was overgrown and short (500m)..The gorge is in a nature reserve and you can pick up pamphlets in English from the Taormina tourist office-
