Visited the museum on a wet Saturday morning. Very interesting museum, but shame all the exhibit information is only in Italian. Guide let us into the room where the Roman ships are, which was very interesting. Definitely worth seeing

This museum certainly deserves its complete title, "The National Archaeological Museum." My wife and I got a tour from two archaeology students who were working at the museum to help pay for their graduate studies; the guides were the key to making our visit worthwhile, so we highly recommend that you ask for a tour. If you like history, you'll be delighted with this museum, which recently started displaying remains of ancient Roman ships that were sunk during a Vandal invasion in 456. Many of the artifacts were in display cases, and our guides were very helpful explaining their significance. The museum is also a short distance from the Santa Croce Historical Quarter ("Quartiere Storico"), which has two churches that are hundreds of years old, and from the Basilica San Simplicio, which was built in the 11th Century. Wandering around Olbia and meeting its friendly people is a welcome change from experiencing the cookie cutter overpriced resorts in the area, which are very nice but could just as easily be located anywhere from the French or Italian Riviera to Hawaii. If you need an escape from the ostentatiousness of your nearby resort, the Archaeological Museum is a great place to start!

A stunning modern building in a brilliant location on the water's edge. But inside it is almost empty. There are more posters and multimedia kiosks than genuine ancient artefacts. Wouldn't you think that in such a place, with such a heritage, the curators could provide a proper exhibition? The only substantial thing worth seeing was the reconstructed hull of a Roman ship.
