“A great option slightly out of town”
Reviewed December 27, 2005

It's been a while since we stayed here, but I thought I would add my thoughts.

Firstly, I agree with a lot of what has been said about how run down the place seems. But, I would urge people travelling in the Mediterranean to adjust their expectations. The things that are most important, comfort, safety and good value were all there. Yes, it looks a little rundown, but so many places in this part of the world do.

We had a room with a sea view. Watching the sunset across the bay and listening to the sea lap the pebble beach was wonderful.

The restaurant is great and offers good value. We went à la carte, and had a feast, including pasta and seafood, for very little money.

I agree that the breakfast is not up to much.

The Calamosca is a slice of real Sardinia, a little on the rough side but with loads of charm, and a friendly welcome.

The Hotel looked like a 70s hospital. The rooms are small and there was a faint but unpleasant odour. The Hotel is close to Cagliari and once you find it, if driving it is easy to find again (tip: head for signs for Stadium and after that there are signposts).

Try to get a sea view, we got stuck with the view of a road and had to lean halfway out the window to see the magnificent sunset!

The dinner was lovely. there is a limited choice but it was very good. the breakfast on the otherhand was disappointing, the food was all prepacked.

We had read the previous reviews so were a bit anxious on arrival, especially as the restaurant sign is broken, and the outside needs a lick of paint. However, we had a super stay. The staff were very keen to make our stay enjoyable, and addressed issues very promply. The half board menu is local Sardinian food - we had fun deciphering the menu, but the staff did their best with translation as we don't speak Italian. There is not much choice, but the skill of the chef is evident if you're prepared to take a risk! The A la Carte menu is quite extensive, and the restaurant is heaving every night of the week with locals that make the jouney - there is nothing else in Calamosca apart from the beach and hotel - so that speaks for itself for the quality of the food. The private beach is rocky with a decked area for sunbathing. The seabed undulates, so not really suitable for children. However, take goggles or snorkle as the seabed itself is stunning, and there is a multitude of fish and vegetation to be seen. We were very relaxed at the end of our weeks stay.

We spent 2 weeks at hotel. It is in desperate need of a facelift! The building needs repair and redecoration as a matter of urgency. It does not have a lift. The sign is broken and rubbish and rubble remained piled high near the kitchen door for our whole stay. The breakfast is meagre. That said, the staff were very helpful and the hotel is in a great location. The sea facing rooms offer great views and they are clean. The restaurant is very busy after 8.30pm so get there before then!

We took advantage of the new easyjet service to Cagliari for a three day break. The calamosca was ideal because it was close to the city and the airport but was also directly on the beach. The hotel could do with a little maintenance, but the staff are very helpful and the restaurant offers good food at reasonable prices. We tried the half board menu but it didn't offer much choice or particularly good value so went back to al la carte. They will collect you from the airport for 15 euros which is a good deal and will take you back as well. The bus does stop outside, but we once waited two hours for one to come, so maybe they are not too reliable.
We would certainly go back

Plus points:

Very clean. Bed linen changed daily
Probably best location in town (although about 10 mins out)
Good public transport to town
good veiws

Minus:

Breakfast (even by continental standards) Dreadful
Bar uncomfortable. Service slow/non existent
building in state of advanced decay
restaurant very pricey for the area and the worst we found

info:
to get to town take the no 11 bus from outside to the traffic lights and change, not on to PF or PQ as they suggest (the times don't link up - you wait 34 mins) instead take no 5 (which runs 1 min after) and it gets you to town via a more circuitous route than PF or PQ but you can jump off at the shops.
All week bus pass 7 euro.
Taxi single fare hotel - city : 10 euro. To airport - allow 15 mins 15 euro
Typical meal of v high standard in city centre incl wine for 2: 30 euro

we visited cagliari sardinia early september, 2004. stayed at Hotel Calamosca. It's a very nice, basic hotel. the best thing is the location...out of the city, but very close to the city. The views were worth the money! the restaurant is good, the coffee excellent and service very cordial and efficient. we found that the staff will do anything to make your stay the best it can be. The city bus system was very good and there is a bus stop to town right outside the hotel...also, there beach is not private, it's a public beach. it's small, but nice. pretty crowded during the weekend, but not so much during the week. there is also a nice snack bar (with beer!) right on the beach. overall, a very nice, basic hotel...we would visit again!
