Camping La Mariposa
Ranked #94 of 147 Specialty Lodging in Alghero
Reviewed August 5, 2009

My boyfriend and I, we have just returned from a 4 day trip to Alghero, Sardinia, where we stayed at the La Mariposa Camping site. It was just great - the location is perfect, straight on the beach and walking distance from the historic center of Alghero. The camping has a restaurant and a conveniece store. The only thing we disliked was that it was a little loud sometimes due to the road behind the camping. But other than that, it we spent 4 beautiful days over there. Also, you can ask for a safe box - free of charge; internet access is also possible - i didn't use it, so hard to say if it is slow or fast, but i believe it was 2eur/15 min.

Stayed here for a long weekend - there were 8 of us in two chalets. Great value, worked out at about 20 euro or so each a night to be right beside beach, to have our own bathroom and to have kitchens to cook in. Staff very friendly, campsite is very handy to centre of town either by bus or taxi, beach that you reach by walking out the gates to the left, past the hospital and up the path through the pine trees is lovely both for sunbathing during the day and walking down at night.

Like most campsites, Mariposa has a silence rule after 10pm. At 9:30pm we were just finishing dinner outside our chalet when the world's angriest German man who was staying in a campervan parked right in front of our chalet (where it later transpired he should not have been parked) came over and caused a massive scene, shouting, slamming the table, and upsetting/intimidating people. It was difficult to get the security guards to take our complaints about this man's behaviour seriously but the campsite owner is the most lovely man and he ensured that the problem was resolved.

Anyway, generally a great value, quiet, well situated place. Would absolutely recommend :)

We stayed at La Mariposa towards the middle of October after finding some cheap Ryanair flights for a cheap cheaky get-away. There were no sightseeing agendas, no must-dos just a change of scenery and a pleasant relax for 100 quid each.

We decided to get the orange bus from the airport. The price was 70cents, though the one machine at the airport swollowed all our money so we were left with no euro coins an no ticket either, but what-the-hell we followed the flow of people all-in-the-same-boat and managed to get to La Mariposa. For those new to this the bus stops at Fertila first (everyone looks at each other, and there is no one who speaks english to ask), don't get off here, La Mariposa is at the second stop about 50 yards or so ahead of you on the right.

Our first impressions were that the staff were friendly, allthough the majority did not speak clear english. As were were coming at towards the end of the season the restuarant was already shut and shop was in the process of shutting, very dissapointing!!! particually given that it is on the listing of facilities.
However, we managed to get stocks at the main supermarket which is about 10 minutes walk (right as you exist the camp site) and down a side-street left as you reach the internet cafe/bar. The prices were very reasonable there.

The campsite is in an excellent location, couldn't be better, which is enough for me to recommend it just for that, just next to the beach, with it's own private entry and in nice pine wooded area. We choose to stay in a caravan, primarily because it was cheap (~25 euros per night) and avoided bringin at tent (which would have brought us into the realms of ryanair hold luggage, we also ththough it would be more comfortable. Mistake, the caravans are very old (probably in excess of 30 years) and should have been replaced long ago, there were gaps in the vent filters meaning mosquittos were getting in (we got around 60 bites between the two of us over the 4 nights, they also keep you awake at night buzzing past your ear), the beds were to short (and I'm only 5'10! And no sink - you have to go and wash stuff at the communal sinks - although that's not too much of an issue.

Having said that in between getting bitten-to-death and sleepless nights we did have a relaxing stay and fortuantely the wweather held up. The sea view is awesome when it's sunny.

On other subjects, the showers and toilets were excellent - we never experienced a cold shower and in our experience one token was enough per shower. The communal sinks however were a different storey, two taps (hot and cold) but no hot water!!! Totally unacceptable lapse of hygene, in any place you prepare food you would be shut down if you didn't have hot water - I don't see why because it's a campsite it should have a different set of rules.

Alghero its-self is a faily pleasant place. I get the feeling that La Mariposa is at the it gets more affluent as you move into the old town. It was however dissapointing how little effort the place has put into making it a pleasant place for tourists. There was graffiti everwhere (we never saw anyone do it which suggests it's been there for ages, although the graffiti artists seem to pay a little more respect for the ancient area of the town), the beaches could also do with a tidy. Everyone who goes should visit the old town, its excellent food, excellent independent shops and cafes. I recommend you have at least one cappucino aswell so you know what a real one tastes like!

All-in-all the stay was relaxing as hoped and not a bad holiday for 100 quid each but we were both left with a slight feeling of dissapointment, we had expected a little more effort on the campsites part and same for the town. If you are staying in the campsite with your own equipment I would definately recommend it but stay away from the caravans - I can't speak for other accomodation though it looked much more pleasant. I bet the campsite was amazing when it was first opened but I can't help but feel without some significant investment, its living on borrowed time.

[Oh and one more advice if you decide to go - when you head back you need to first purchase a bus ticket for the way back from the tabacci shop (50 yards to the left as you exit the campsite), the buses run rougly every hour (I think its the same bus that does one circuit), when you get on you need to stick the ticket in the machine, which will timestamp it so it can't be used again.]

I have nothing but good things to say about this campsite. It is in a great location, approx 15 mins drive from the airport and approx 20 mins walk (along the beach) from the old town of Alghero. We stayed for three nights in early October 08, then went off to a few other campsites on the Northern coast, returning for one final night in Alghero.

We brought our own tent and paid €8 per adult per night(including admittance of car). Prices rise quite significantly in high season, when they charge individually for the tent and car as well as per person.

They also hire out little caravans (which looked a bit old/grubby, but fine for what they are) with outdoor terraces, "camere" (rooms), which are like little wooden cabins, again with small outdoor terraces, as well as bungalows and "villas" (not as grand as they sound!). Some of these latter are right by the road so might not be ideal if you want total silence or have kids to put to bed.

Campers can put up tents pretty much anywhere there's space; most of the pitches are on soft ground under the pine trees. There are plenty of washing lines around as well as plastic table and chairs, to be used by anyone who chances upon them. There's also room for mobile homes/campervans (and there were plenty of them around; probably more than tents).

There is direct access onto the beach, and they rent out windsurfing equipment and, I think, provide tuition. They also rent out sunloungers/umbrellas on their own little bit of beach, but you can of course just plonk your towel on it for free.

The little supermarket is well-stocked with groceries; fruit and veg, fresh ham and cheese, bread, milk etc, as well as toiletries and camping supplies. There is also a bar/cafe and they serve pizzas, which we didn't sample so can't comment. They shower/loo facilities are fine - clean and plenty of loo roll! It's 50 centimes for a hot shower but cold showers are free. There's also a big communal barbecue in the middle of the site, which I believe anyone can use (probably very busy in high season).

Staff were friendly and helpful, and they kindly let us keep our car parked there for a few hours after checking out on our final day, as our flight wasn't until that evening. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here!

We have just come back from a week at the campsite and, being a fairly reluctant camper myself, I was a little worried about the prospect. The campsite did a lot to allay these fears!
We found a nice spot below some trees which, considering it was in the high 30's, was a godsend. The campsite was clean and the showers, although at times a little sandy, were on the whole similarly clean. It seemed OK priced (bearing in mind the overall expensiveness of Sardinia) although you should be aware that you pay per person AND the cost of your tent too.
A good week, I would recommend the place.

A really great relaxing camping holiday. The location was wonderful near to the beach and about a 20 min walk from Alghero. We camped under the trees which was perfect. The facilities were great always clean and there is a cafe/bar/pizza place/shop - selling cheese and meats. This is a family run campsite and they were always friendly and helpful. It is a really cute, laid back, relaxing environment. You can hire bikes for 10 euros a day. Alghero is beautiful and if you are willing to cycle it is easy to get to other beaches too. Definitely a return destination. ps. and the lattes are soooo good

We stayed here in June. The campsite has a really nice feel with all the pine trees and lovely beach. The toliets and showers were always clean although the showers were sometimes cold. The pizza and coffee at the cafe were excellent.

The caravan was a bit damp and really old. We opened the windows on the first night but then the caravan was filled with mozzies and I was bitten all over. This was the downside of the stay.

The caravan was well equiped with pats pans and plates. We really enjoyed cooking our own meals with the fantastic local produce. There is a wonderful market in the centre of Algehro and a cheap supermarket called Eurospin provided us with all our pasta and wine. The campsite supermarket is quite expensive so I would recommend visiting EuroSpin for washing-up-liquid and washing powder.

We took a boat trip to the caves and a bus to Bosa. Both good days out that can be easily arranged in town.
Buy bus tickets before you get on the bus.
Airport buses run from around 5 am but check you know where the stop is, we accidently missed it.
