Stayed here for 4 nights in one bed apartment (Room 427) beside main hotel and in general it was fine. It is a 3 minute stroll to the beach and there is a very convenient supermarket literally across the road. The room was very spacious but in need of redecoration. For example, the light on the balcony didn't work and there was no cover over the light. The fan in the bathroom was covered in dust and obviously hadn't been cleaned for a good while. The shower door was very flimsy and there was something like mould on the bottom of the shower door. The unit beside the cooker ring was scorched and was in need of replacement. These are the sort of things which should be addressed before guests arrive in order to qualify for a higher rating.
Now, that's the bad stuff out of the way. As I said it was close to the beach and a good 20 minute stroll to the old port of Alghero along a lovely promenade. The bus from the airport (Route AA) stopped about 5 minutes from the hotel outside a pharmacy on Via Don Minzoni. It only costs €1 if you buy your ticket in the airport at a machine beside the exit at arrivals. However, as in my case the machine wouldn't work and you had to pay an extra 50c to the driver on board the bus. Still, much better value than €25 in a taxi for a 15 minute trip.
I feel I got value for what I paid but the hotel is definitely not a 4 star premises. One other thing that people should be aware of is the electric sockets in Sardinia. The standard European adaptor does not fit into the sockets on the wall. You have to buy a local 3 pin adaptor which slots into the sockets and you then insert your European adaptor into this. One other quaint local tradition is the nigh impossibilty to have a meal in a restaurant during the afternoon. they seem to serve upto around 3pm and don't serve food again until 7pm. We were hoping to have a meal around 5pm as our flight was at 9.30pm but ended up having a pizza on a beach cafe!
Alghero airport is quite small with very limited facilities, particularly after you go past security. There is literally nowhere to buy drink or food after security apart from an over priced vending machine. There are shops and bars before security so I'd recommend staying out there until you have to go for your flight.
Have to say, Alghero and Sardinia are lovely places to visit and have a real Mediterrean atmosphere. The old town in Alghero is a maze of small inter twining streets and is really spectacular at night. I'd recommend a visit and hope to return again.
