Hi All
I agree with the person who wrote " it's the worst hotel ever". 1- half of the hotel is a building site, we were put in a room overlooking the building site = noise starts at 8 am.
We asked for another room, and we were refused, although there were free rooms our floor. 2) unexpected charge 10 euro per night for air-conditioning 3) at the day of departure you have to leave the room at 10am, if you are few minutes late they charge you per hour, and if you leave after 1.30 you pay for another day 4) tv in the room does not work 5) very, very unfriendly staff ( maybe except for 1 person working there). They really do not care about the clients, or about return business. Book something else.
The only good thing about this hotel is central location, but with building site on one side, and loud road on the other, good luck finding quiet room.

The hotel is very basic and no relation to the web site, there is a massive apartment building being built attached to the side of the hotel. We were lucky, the work had stopped for a few days, it has now started again, noisy from very early in the day.
The standard room we had was very basic, there are no refrigerators in the rooms, difficult when the temperature was 40c. Very unhappy to find we had to pay 10 euros a day for aircon, this is only in standard rooms, makes the price look better.
The breakfast was very basic, but that seem to be the norm, some packaged food which didnt inspire.
Right opposite the beach, but at the seaweed end, only had to walk 200 yards for a clean bit.
20 minutes stroll along the promonade to old town Alghero which was delightful.
5 minutes to a supermarket and 2 minutes to an ATM.
Very noisy for the rooms at the front with road noise. we were at the back with no balcony but there are open balconies at the front on each floor for you to use. We watched the sunset and had a chinese takeaway, sorry but after 2 weeks of Pasta and Pizza, it was a joy.
We had a car, there is no parking, pot luck on side streets.

We have just come back from Il Gabbiano hotel in Alghero and this hotel was appauling for the following reasons:
1)There is no parking
2)We are non smokers and were offered a smoking room and refused help although there was availibility in the hotel.
3)Air conditioning is chargeable at 10 euros per day (which is illegal when you are unwillingly placed in a smoking room!)
4)Breakfast is from 08:00 to 09:30 (when all other hotels have it for much longer).
5)Breakfast items are extremely cheap, scarse and of extremely low quality.
6)There is no safe in the room,a safe option is available at reception between 13:00 and 16:00 only!
7)There are pictures of untidy rooms displayed around the hotel with the threat that these will not be cleaned if left in a mess.
8)You must vacate your room by 11:00 each day or your room is not guaranteed to be cleaned.
9)1 shampoo (10ml per person)in a sachet is provided per person AND THAT'S IT!
10)Upon checkout you must vacate your room by 10:00 or else you will be charged.

As a whole staff were extremely unhelpful and unfriendly, the hotel is expensive for what it offers (nothing),would not recommend or EVER step foot in there again, pay more and stay somewhere decent!

Location is the only recommendation for this hotel. The room was pokey, shower unit tiny, building slill in progress early in the morning next door. There are plenty of much better, newer, cheaper hotels and appartments nearby. there was lots of availability in late june.

My wife and I stayed at IL Gabbiano between 23-26 August 2008 inclusive. As you walk in, you feel at ease, there's a nice welcoming atmosphere. One of the owners, Antonio, a fantastic guy, had such a personality - he was the sort of person you felt that you had known all your life. He gave us excellent advice on what beach to go to, where to go to eat, sights to see etc.
All of the staff were extremely courteuos and treated you with the utmost respect at all times.
The hotel felt safe, as it was always manned in reception, including at night.
Having read some of the less complimetary reviews after booking, I was sceptical about what I would find.
We were unfortunate not get a beach view room, which was at the front of the hotel, and were given a side room.
Yes, very basic; bed, tv (with remote), portable fan (air con was extra €10 per day) BUT what would you expect from a B&B.
Breakfast was continental; ample croissants, (freshly baked and the bagged assorted type), three types of juices, bottled water, milk, hot drinks, cakes, cereals, mortadella/ham, cheese, fresh rolls - CONSTANTLY REPLENISHED - NO COMPLAINTS.
The only down sides and the reason that I have not given it an excellent rating was that the shower was minute and being a big guy, I struggled; and the fact that once you had vacated your room, there was no place in the hotel to leave luggage safely locked away from sight.

I WOULD RECOMMED IT TO ANYONE

Very nice and very clean Hotel in a great location, really close to the beach and the Historic town centre. We were there for 11 nights, and found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful at all times. We had a front panoramic room, and the view was beautiful. Even though the room was facing the road, the noise was not a problem at all when closing the window. We had air conditioning as well so the room was always cool. Plenty of choice for the buffet breakfast. We would definitely go back and would recommend it to any of our friends.
