“Really nice place to stay”
Reviewed September 22, 2010

Stayed here for one week in September. the rooms are very clean and modern. The staff are excellent, very helpful, and all speak very good English. The pool is well maintained and inviting and there is also a small private beach beside the hotel. Overall the hotel is very quite, especially at night. The bar is nice but with very little atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants in town which is about a 15 to 20 min walk. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We booked at the last minute and were plesently surprised by the always friendly greeting - many top class hotels could learn a lot from the Calabona management and staff.
Would not exactly class it as a 4* but having said that the dated darkish rooms were very clean.
Nice buffet continental breakfast served in a large teepee-style marque which unfortunately seemed only to have one music CD - Dire Straits Money for Nothing, daily made its seem like Groundhog day!
It is a 15-20 min walk to the lovely walled old town of Alghero - well worth the effort and you are spoilt for choice for restaurants.
Cab about 10 Euro might be preferred for the journey back as Hotel Calabona on the edge of a slightly run down area habited by a few roving youths - no problem to us but uncomfortable feeling when passing.
Restaurant well run but a bit depressing, located in the basement area with little menu choice for the half-boarders.
Weekly market in Lido area well worth the trek - cheeses to die for!
Local supermarket about 10 mins up the hill - otherwise no shops until you get into the old town.
Lovely craggy coastline and no extra charge for the sunset!
Staff all hardworking and friendly - regardless of rudeness from clients.
Beware jellyfish in the height of summer - more warnings/advise needed from hotel.
Hotel dead of a night time - would benefit from some form of entertainment [outlay money back from drinks?]

Stayed at the beginning of September for 8 nights. Hotel is to the south of the town, a pleasant but rocky 20 minute walk along the coast to the old town, or you can go via the road. Our 13 year old was in a wheelchair so we used the hire car rather than walk, as the road can be steep. The hotel itself looks attractive and is very low-lying, only about 4 floors, so not a hideous high-rise building. Pool was spotless, plenty of loungers available. Tiny rocky beach with loungers and brollies. Buffet breakfast was outside, very attentive service, plenty of bread, fruit, cereal etc., no hot cooked food. Beautiful views out to sea and the nearby headland. Big bathroom with bath, bedrooms had balconies, air con and shutters so stayed wonderfully cool. Bed was very firm. No experience of the restaurant. Excellent restaurants in town, plus one about a minute from the hotel. Hotel's drive from main road is very steep with bad visibility pulling out. Plenty of car parking space. Excursions are arranged. Altogether a lovely stay, very relaxing with attentive service.

Late booked holiday through Thompson, got a good deal.
We picked hotel based on cost and availabilty and look of the hotel on the online.
From moment we arrived, was welcomed with friendly service, where everyone was sorted out with their rooms as quickly as possible.
Hotel looked just like the pictures on line and we were not disappointed with the room size and the view from balcony was great, looking out over the hotel sun terrace and swimming pool towards the sea.
Nice large bathroom with bath and plenty of wardrobe and other storage space for clothes and luggage.
After a quick meeting with the tour rep, we found out that the first 2 nights we were fortunate to be there were festival nights, where a full banquet was laid on, the first night celebrating fish and the second night was suckling pig.
The food for both these nights was excellent, and throughout the rest of our stay, can only say that the food on offer was excellent, the restaurant staff were fantastic and very friendly offering advice on what to have and the wine to go with it.
The room was kept spotless by the hotel maid service throughout, with fresh towells and bed linen, as well as complimentary toiletries.
The hotel reception staff were extremely helpful in advising where to go and how to get there, and even advising best places to shop, and arranging personal service and even discounts in some of the shops.
The hotel was quiet an peaceful, most of the time, with few families staying there, maybe the reason for it.
Would I go back there, yes, it was so peaceful and relaxing, and the staff so friendly and helpful, one of the best stress free holidays I have had.

We enjoyed our annual two week holiday here in August 2010. It is situated on the Calabona headland with beautiful sea views. The hotel cannot be described as luxurious but we were more than happy with the facilities on offer. All the staff were lovely and happy to help at all times.
We had a scrupulously clean superior room on the third floor with a view over the pool and out to sea. The pool is large and excellent (although Italian children can be extremely loud - Ludo and Julia will be long remembered...!!) Poolside service is available, and good food is on offer daily cooked on the barbeque grill and served next to the pool. Our only disappointment here was the need to hire pool towels each day which we had assumed would be supplied. The private beach is lovely with beds and brollies supplied. Access into the sea is quite rocky underfoot.
The food at the hotel was very good, we had a buffet breakfast in the outdoor restaurant each morning and were given a choice each day for our three course evening meal. The fresh fish (filleted at the table) was always a good choice. Unfortunately there was little to do after the meal other than sit in the very quiet poolside bar - some entertainment would have been appreciated.
It is a fair walk away from the Old Town - about 20 minutes. As the temperature was in the top 30 degrees this made a walk to the town in the day quite a trek! We failed (along with other guests) to find the promised local bus. The one taxi we used cost us eight euros. It does have a local large supermarket close by which we used to stock up the fridge in the room with water (and the occasional bottle of Prosecco to sip as we watched the sun set from our balcony!) There is also a popular restauarant within walking distance further along the headland which provides good food with exceptional views out to sea and along the coast.
Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and would happily recommend this quiet hotel.

We enjoyed an excellent week at the Hotel Calabona - beautiful views, a lovely room, a small private beach and a great pool. We enjoyed the 20 minute walk along the seafront into Alghero for our evening meal in one of the many excellent restaurants . The staff at the hotel were bright and welcoming and always ready to help. How could it have been improved - the first minute of the walk was along some new but slightly scruffy paths by the viewing point, the wireless connection in the superior rooms was very poor at times and closing the pool at 6 was a little too early - but these are minor points. We'd definitely go back.

I booked this place after an extensive research (thanks to TripAdvisor) where I must have read 200+ hotel reviews. If you've read other reviews than mine, trust me, they are fairly accurate for the Calabona Hotel which deserve to be in the top 8 for Alghero.
It's true, 'the standard room' is fairly basic, but considering you only sleep in there (rather well), it doesn't matter so much. The hotel is also further away of the town center. However, if you want relaxation, this will be a bonus as the hotel & surroundings are very quite. So if you are scanning the reviews for something seriously negative, you will not find it.
Let's get to the points that make this place stand out:
A) the people factor.
You will see many references in previous reviews and I can only emphasis that the staff makes the difference. Rarely have I experienced such dedicated and truly caring people, most notably Antonio the Head Waiter and Frederico the Manager. Both went the extra mile to make our stay perfect (meal arrangements, gifts, rental car, travel tips and other special requests). We only stayed on week but were sad having to say goodbye to them.
B) the pool
Extremely clean, perfect temperature and super refreshing for diving in (make sure the life guard is not watching).
C) 'La vele'
This super-size Marquee is very special as you dine and have breakfast outside (but sheltered) while you can enjoy the beautiful garden or the stunning sea view. Only until you have been there will you get the answer to the question whether this hotel is 4-star or not.
The daily dinners were of good quality and varied but I might not choose HB again. The restaurants in town are too good to be missed.
Final verdict: 3 star rooms (unless premium), 4 star food, 5 star staff and relaxation.
