Just had a week at the Calabona Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed stay there. Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Pool beautiful and very pretty private beach. Breakfasts served in an interesting tent-like structure with fantastic views, and everything you could wish to eat. One day we had lunch at the hotel which was delicious. Only minor complaint was that the hairdryer provided in the bathroom was very ineffective so my advice is bring your own! Also there weren't many power-points in the room so made charging phones etc tricky.

This is not a hotel that gives you 30 choices of meal from stainless steel buckets, or a pool the size of Monaco, so it is understandable that there are some mixed reviews on the site. This is an old fashioned hotel in the best sense of the word. The service was excellent in all areas, restaurant, bar, reception and room cleaning. The food is prepared specifically for you, with you placing your order at breakfast from a choice of 3 or 4 main courses and the waiters explain what the dishes are and will give recommendations. We were not familiar with the Sardinian specialities so took their advice and were very happy with their suggestions. The food was excellent and the wine and bar reasonably priced. The hotel is an easy 20 mins walk to the old town where the tourist shops, bars and marina are situated. There is a choice of pool or small private beach, both of which were comfortable and convenient for all services. Even the Thomson rep was excellent, being a local resident and providing lots of useful information. If you want a relaxing holiday with good food and excellent service in a comfortable and friendly hotel then give the Calabona a try. If you want an international designer décor with international cuisine to match, perhaps you should try elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view or a partial sea view

The hotel is located in one of the most beautiful locations in Alghero. It is clean and modern and provides a good buffet breakfast. Bar and waiting staff are very friendly and did a great job setting up a romantic poolside meal for us on request. The only draw back was requesting our early start breakfast for tomorrow an hour too late and we were told 'no chance' in an Italian accent of course - out of keeping but we will be driving 3 hours to the airport tomorrow very hungry. Shame

A very nice and cozy hotel on the outskirts of Alghero. Approximately 10 minutes walk to the historical city center, which is a pleasant stroll, especially after late dinner. Hotel staff very helpful and friendly. Hotel benefits from a tiny sandy beach with a rocky entrance with free sunbeds for hotel guests. The breakfast wasn't fantastic, but I suppose, everyone can find something for him. We ended up eating out or buying food at local shops. We got a room with balcony overlooking sea, but, unfortunately, there was no outside lights on the balcony. Wi-Fi signal was quite weak for some of the devices. I suppose it could be better if we had laptop with stronger antenna, but our phones/tablets were frequently losing signal, but staff was very responsive when it came to rebooting routers :-) Overall it is a considerably decent hotel (value for money), especially if you get a sea view room and are going to rent a car. Oh, try out the pizza in a restaurant on top of the hill opposite the hotel. They make real wood oven cooked juicy pizza.

Room Tip: Get a sea-view room

They do reward themselves 4 star. Well, almost. Miss a few things to have the fourth. Could be nicer rooms. Cleaner rooms as well. The personell is friendly, but you have to ask them for anything, that is normal in other countries that they ask you about. F.x when you are by the pool, its normal to ask, once a day, if you need refreshness. You feel they are a little bit stressed by anything you ask them for. But, friendly staff. The room attendant need to learn more about how to clean a room, did not do a good job.

Dear Mr. Stian Hagemann,

thank you for your review.

I apologise if you found something that was not as per your expectations.

Usually our cleaning department is praised by our customers, but I understand that there was been some problem and I'm going to check this situation immediatly.

I believe that the bar staff were happy to serve your refreshments, but it tries to be discrete and to not put stress to the guests who are relaxing in the swimming pool terrace.

I hope to have another oportunity to prove to you that your suggestions have been applied.

We just came back from a week in Alghero where we stayed at the Calabona. On the whole the hotel is nice, the staff is very helpful and speak good English. We were upgraded from Standard to Classic rooms which was very nice.

Breakfast is a buffet with a good selection of bread, pastries, cheeses, jams and fruit, also scrambled and boiled eggs and sausages. During this time, breakfast was served outdoors under a huge marquee facing the sea which was very nice.

The swimming pool is large and very clean with plenty of pool side beds and umbrellas.

The only negative I would note is that they allow pets in the rooms, and that walls are fairly thin with no sound proofing. This was a problem for us only on the last night luckily as the room next door had a dog which would continue barking till 3AM and again from 6 along with the owner shouting at the dog to keep it quiet and the thin walls, we could not get much sleep.

Spent a wonderful weekend here. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from the town but quieter than if it were closer. There is a bus which can take you to town. The rooms were well kept although the beds a little hard! Breakfasts were really good with a large variety and was served in a large area with sea view and outdoor seating.

Room Tip: Rooms with either sea view or pool view are worth it
