Stayed for one week in mid-September. Very short taxi from airport - 27euro. Stunning coastal/bay location with beautiful views over Porto Conte. Hotel very clean and modern. Peaceful and secluded environment focused on individuals, couples and adult groups. Hotel is spacious and assured of privacy even when by the pool or in the bar. Hotel is in the Regional Park and offers good forest coastal looped walks so has something for outdoor/wildlife types who want to escape the escapism. The main negative is that due to its isolation the hotel's prices for drinks and food courses are over-priced and not balanced. The set menu 4 course dinner is 32euro, however if you want just a main special it would cost 20euro and would be a small portion. 6euro for a beer!! The standard of food was also inconsistent, one night we had the set menu and was excellent, the next we had something off the a la carte and it was dreadful. Breakfast was very good. Other negatives may be superficial and probably just personal opinion, however, the female reception staff are unwelcoming and unhelpful. The female waitress was great, however the waiters were a bit disorganised (you had to ask for everything, butter, wine list, there was no intuition). There is a wee pizzeria in a nice setting and much better value 5min walk called Embarcadero as an alternative option. Also bus into Alghero is frequent from outside hotel.

Room Tip: Paying extra for seaview or executive room well worth it.

Our 2nd hotel in Italy so we were not that surprised by unfriendly even rude staff. I'm sure it's because staff are underpaid in general but if a hotel is charging these kind of rates you expect a level of courtesy. Pool boy and barman were particularly sullen. Charge for use of kayaks really irked us. Others have said the food is bad but we found it to be ok. Lady at next table saying loudly to chef that food was terrible was a bit embarrassing though. Rooms are small but you forget that when you open your balcony door: amazing view. Overall very relaxing but really there is no excuse in an expensive hotel for the lack of wifi in the rooms, charge for kayak, and the unfriendly staff members.

We stayed for 1 week in Sept '12. I'm very conflicted about El Faro. I read the reviews before booking and the consensus is true: a beautiful location & view, rooms are good but it has the potential to be outstanding but the owners / staff don't seem to have an interest to make it fabulous.
Good points: view, bed, breakfast, bathroom (although hairdryer was from 1980s), peacefulness, enough sunloungers.
Bad points: Service was not the most friendly and forthcoming. Casual lunch offer of sandwiches (prepacked) was absolutely terrible - I don't understand why a 4* hotel with a pool doesn't offer a more varied and healthier lunch menu. It drives guests out of the hotel who don't want a 4 course meal or a prepackaged sandwich. This is Italy after all!!!! Also the cleanliness of the sunbathing areas was bad- broken glass and cigarette buds.

We didn't eat dinner there as the restaurants in Alghero are so varied and great. Embarcadero down the road is also quite good for dinner. Note that you need a car here.

Overall fab location and view, very tranquil.
Service and standard seem very lacking and it has so much potential to be fabulous if they wanted it to be..

The trip from the Airport was about 20mins by local taxi 28euros we were early morning but the hotel soon made our room available and were soon relaxing The room was clean they have a salt water swimming pool that was nice but swimming from the jetty in the sea was ok.
The evening meal was a bit of a let down as you had to prebook a table and the meal was a set menu about 32-36 euros per person.
We found a very nice restaurant a short walk back along the coast road by the marina that offered a good choice and at a reasonable price.
If you wish to travel on the local Bus into Town buy the tickets from the hotel and they should cost 2.5 euros each return the trip takes about 30mins tip do not pay the driver cash as this will cost you double!

Room Tip: Sea rooms offer a lovely view

The white furnishings in the bar terrace area give a slight ibiza vibe to what is an elegant hotel. Beautiful views with no planes flying past or city in distance just porto conte national parks pristine coastline. love the oversized round daybeds in bar and double pool loungers. no shouty 'entertainment' ir activities at all thank god. Towels delivered to room daily for sunbathing. You swim from flattish rocks on which a number of platforms have been carved for sun loungers. Liked the small seawater pool. not much in the way of poolside or beachside service, one bagnino doubling as barman often absent. breakfast fine, biggest weakness no proper day time snack menu - the burgers or fresh made paninis you would expect - just expensive prepackaged 'toastie' things microwaved. only lunch option formal three course thing, dinner same and not cheap. rooms fine although as with other italian hotels pillows flat and stiff. Also, bring mosquito repellant! Bottom line, you must have a car to visit beautiful local white sand beaches and lovely restaurants. Do that and you will love this calm elegant place as a base a class above all the other places around here.
