Last week I spent some days in Bari and I obviously decided to have my dinners out in the wonderful old part of Bari (the historic neighborhoods of Bari downtown). This area is swarming with bars and restaurants, and indeed I took a bite in a few nice places. La cecchina has been by far the best both for the unique environment (the location is phenomenal) and for the supreme quality of the food. Appetizers and desserts.... OMG soooooo tasty!

I discovered La Cecchina doing research for a cruise stop in Bari. A group of 14 having made contact via the CruiseCritic website were hoping to enjoy a local lunch, local wines and taste some of best from the region.

Monica at La Cecchina arranged a table for 1pm for 14 people. As it turned out, we had to return to our ship by 2:45pm so time was limited. With hindsight I should have requested an earlier time. La Cecchina did all they could to serve us quickly and provided an excellent lunch.

La Cecchina is easy to find, helpfully in our case as first time visitors and has a great location on a large Piazza. Easily found following a morning exploring Bari it is close to the ship/shuttle drop off point.

I loved the mixed antipasti especially the Burrata cheese which had been recommended to us by an Italian friend. The breads (focaccia style and others) were very nice which we enjoyed whilst ordering our lunch.

Our group enjoyed a second dish of either pasta, meatballs, salad, fish which tasted fresh and full of flavour.

The beautiful interior of the restaurant was a cool break from the hot day outside. There is outdoor seating available for smaller groups looking out onto the piazza, we were happy to be indoors in the shade.

We would have preferred longer to enjoy more of the excellent food and wine available and perhaps more courses. Our visit coincided with formal night later the ship, so perhaps the light lunch we enjoyed was a sensible choice.

The average price for our group was around 20 euro per person including a little local wine.

La Cecchina was a very pleasant and memorable way to round off our short visit to Bari. We shall plan a further visit next time we are in Bari, and I hope you will find it as enjoyable as we did, whether visiting from a cruise ship or with more time to spare.

The best food we had during our week in Bari, and, not coincidentally perhaps, the most expensive. We were fortunate to be accompanied by a couple who spoke Italian fluently, so we ordered based on a conversation with the owner rather than picking from the menu. The food was delightful, fit for foodies. Though the prices were a little more than we had paid at other restaurants, they were quite reasonable by big-city USA standards. Indeed, the same meal at a restaurant capable of serving it up in Washington, DC, would have been 50% more, at least.

One of our cruise stops was Bari, Italy and I had pretty much written this off as a waste of a day.But we were delightfully surprised how much we loved strolling around the old town. We wanted to taste some local cuisine and began looking for places with lots of locals and chanced upon La Cecchina -- and it was just a perfect fit for our family of 8 -- some wanted exceptional food and some wanted a romantic setting -- and we got both and at a reasonable price for the variety of food we purchased. We had numerous appetizers, water, wine, and generous entries for app $30/ pp. Everything was very delicious and it felt like we were inside an old castle. The staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke English. Our only complaint was that some of the food took a little longer than we had hoped.. but we understand that quality cooking takes time. I don't normally recommend restaurants, but this was worth a review. I'm keeping the card and next time in Bari will come and eat here again.
