“Nice Basilica with a fantastic roof, a lot of history...”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

The basilica is not spectacular when seen from outside. But once you're in, watch up to the roof. Great paintings! Furthermore the history of San Nicola is also interesting and most of it is represented in the crypta in the underground.

“Free delight for your eyes”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

Tolentino is a nice town but what is really fantastic is the Basilica of San Nicola. You start with the exquisite white facade, then you cross the cloister and finally you enter the so called Cappellone (great chapel) all covered with wonderful medieval frescoes whose colours are very well preserved. They represent different scenes with particulars from the life in the Middle Ages in central Italy. You can snap at pleasure. It is closed between the 12 and 15.30 and the entrance is completely free.

“Interesting architecture”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

Not as ornate as many Catholic churches, it has some interesting Roman architecture. The crypt is very interesting. There is not much difference inside than in the Cattedrale di San Sabino.

“BLONDE BASILICA”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

The huge stones used to build this basilica look sun-bleached and clean. It's the only church in the world that houses both Roman Catholic ( first floor) and Eastern Orthodox services (Basement level). Not to be missed. Feels holy and ancient, as if you could go off and join the Crusades after your visit.

“Orthodox and Roman rite Basilica”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Historically very interesting church. Relics of St. Nicolas were stolen from Asia minor and brought to Bari where the Basilica was then constructed. St Nicolas has great importance in orthodox religion and there is a working Russian orthodox church in the crypt.
