The Palace Hotel is perfectly situated for exploring both the old and the new sections of Bari. If you wanted to, you can walk from the train station along the pedestrian mall (regular street closed to traffic) all the way to Corso Vittorio Immauele, a main street that serves as a dividing line between the two Bari sections. Then it is a short half block walk and you're in the twisty passages of the old city.
Reception staff was generous with their help and advice. They ensure you leave the key with them by putting it on a large heavy room numbered piece of metal; that is, unless you're staying in the more posh section that uses electronic cards. I actually like the practice of leaving the key at the front desk before exploring outside.
The room was comfortable and clean, and very spacious. I didn't have a view, except for the buildings immediately next to the hotel, but I was not there for the hotel window view after all.
I ate at the hotel restaurant twice and found the food excellent; service the first night was a bit off though but it was very good the second time. My friends joined me for dinner on the terrace the night they set off fireworks from the old town, as part of the St. Nicholas celebrations.
I was there for four nights and recommend the hotel highly.More
