“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

We went in not expecting much and were surprised by the great service (everybody from the owner to the cleaning lady) and the spacious, clean room with a superb hand-painted ceiling. The room was a good size (the huge ceiling height made everything appear bigger) with an Italian style balcony. The hotel is located in a beautiful building with two or three other hotels (I lost count), so make sure that you're at the right reception. Also the the city's shopping streets are a few minutes away, so is the center. If you're traveling by car like us there is a big parking garage just across the street from the hotel. The breakfast consisted mostly of sweets & coffee, but the beautiful, quiet terrace made up for it.

I was in a bit of a bind as I'd been on trains literally all day so I couldn't find a place to stay that would be open after my 11:30 PM-arrival, and then some locals pointed me to this hotel. It was still staffed at 12:30 in the morning and the receptionist was polite and helpful despite my low level of Italian. I paid 40 Euros (exchange rate at the time was $50 and change), which, by Italian standards, is pretty darn cheap, for a 1-bed room with a sink, desk, and dresser. It was tiny and the bathroom was down the hall, but you get what you pay for. The important thing (and what I had been worried about) is that it was clean and in a safe area.

We're Americans living in Italy, and we've travelled all over the country, so we have a pretty good idea by now of what we should expect when we visit a new Italian city. This hotel was appalling in every way (except the location, which was handy to the train-station). The room decor could be categorized as "1960's flea market" and the room smelled bad because for some unknown reason, the window was kept closed. An electrical outlet in a key location in the room was actually hanging out of the wall by the wires, covered in electrical tape, and so I didn't dare use it.
Breakfast was the worst we've ever seen in Italy, a country which takes food extremely seriously: there was stale coffee in a thermos, and you were allotted just one limp, plastic-wrapped pastry that had come out of a box (something like twinkies, but not as nice!).
The icing on the cake, though, was the incredibly indifferent, ever-unsmiling staff. The first one, whom we met when we arrived, actually held out her hand and demanded payment in cash immediately, although we had booked the room with a credit-card. She then demanded "extra" payment, also in cash, for towels! We later asked her for a map of the city (since she hadn't offered us one), and she hesitated a long time before finally handing us an illegible b&w photocopy that was useless.
Another employee, whom we met in the breakfast-room in the morning, didn't reply when we asked (in Italian, mind you!) for a cup of tea, and simply walked away and left us there to wait and wait, until we finally realized she was just ignoring us completely. We started an informal contest among us, to see whether anyone working in the hotel would ever smile, or say hello to us before we greeted them first--and nobody ever did.
The day we left, a third employee checked us out and then, incredibly, refused to give us a receipt, telling us, "you can come back this afternoon and get one." Um, what was the point of that, please? In any case, we had to catch a train! All hotels are required by Italian law to give a receipt when you check out, even if you also have a receipt from a credit-card transaction--which we didn't, since staffer #1 insisted we had to give her cash the moment we arrived, remember?
While we were still there, we tried to make a joke of all the bad service, but the business about the receipt is not funny. For the same price in other major Italian cities, we have found numerous hotels with much nicer rooms, more amenities, and professional service. The city of Bari was interesting, but we would never stay in this place again.

We stayed here after getting the all day ferry from Dubrovnik, before getting a flight from Bari the next morning. Hotel was easy to find on foot from the port. Good size room, clean and comfortable, light sleepers might be affected by street noise. Breakfast was basic and the coffee was cold but wasn't expecting much. Staff were friendly and let us leave our bags for a couple of hours after check out.

I stayed in Bari overnight on my way to Rome, after coming over from Croatia on the ferry. The hotel was fairly easy to find and in close proximity to the train station. My room and the (shared) bathroom were spotless and the staff very friendly despite the language barrier! This hotel was ideal was an overnight stop-over.

My wife wanted to look thru old records for links to her family in a nearby town so we stayed in Bari for two nights. The hotel was very good, with a nice breakfast in the morning, and close to the train station. The only issue we had was the street outside was very noisy and our room seemed to operate as an amplifier. We slept thru the night, but if you are a light sleeper you'll want a room that's not facing the street, as ours was.
