I stayed one night here. It wasn’t my choice, but the choice of a conference where I was speaking. My guess is that it isn’t in most guidebooks, though I haven’t checked. It is apparently a converted monastery, close to, and perhaps associated with, the church of Santa Maria on Monte Berico just outside Vicenza. It’s a modest two star hotel, with few of the normal facilities. No TV or phone in the room. My room was en suite with a shower. There’s no wifi. However, this is a really nice place. First, being on Monte Berico, it has great views over the city, and on a clear morning to the mountains beyond. The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable, the sheets crisp, and the housekeeping is, how shall I say, immaculate. Water pressure in shower is fine. Breakfast is a modest buffet, with no cooked dishes. But, for once, the hotel coffee is really good and made to order. The croissants are excellent. The staff are helpful. It’s a 15 minute walk downhill along a picturesque partly cobbled path down to the station (I don’t recommend it for people with roller cases, and I haven’t tried it uphill: it’s rather steep), and probably a 30 minute walk to the centre. The church of Santa Maria, less than 100m away, was designed by Palladio, and is definitely worth a detour. The area is charming, and if I come back to Vicenza, this would be top of my list of places to stay.
