Castelvecchio Aparthotel

Represents excellent value-for-money (stayed 3 nights). We had a large room compared to general hotel size. Also with complete kitchen (including cooktop & oven, plates and glasses and pots & pans). Hotel also has apartments for long-term stay - ideal for family stays. Friendly and helpful staff.

Long (and with luggage exhausting) walk from the station, so consider a taxi to and from the hotel. Taxi costs around 10-12 euro.

Wonderful bonus to our stay was a full-sized bath in the bathroom. Great treat after a full-day of sightseeing each day.

A stone's throw from the Castelvecchio (well worth visiting). Close to Arena di Verona, shops, piazzas and Jules's house and balcony.

Continental breakfast daily.

A bonus to our stay in Verona was a day trip out to Lake Garda (get details from tourist office as hotel staff had scant information about trips to the Lake). Consider a bus trip tp Sirmione - an extremely pretty lakeside town built on the only peninsula on the entire lake. The Grotto di Catullo on the peninsula is fascinating - the ruins date back to Roman days and is the most important ruin of a classic villa in all of Northern Italy.

Would be more than happy to stay at Residence Castelvecchio on any return trip to Verona.

We decided to visit Verona during late July for two nights, for the food, the ambience and the Opera.

I tried to book virtually all the hotels reviewed favourably on this site, but was too late. Whatever you do, book early in Verona during Opera season.

One of the landladies suggested the Hotel Castelvecchio, which we took and were given a huge room with a bathroom and a kitchen. They seem to have a mixture of normal rooms and apartments.

The decor is interesting, if not a little dated, the bathroom was fine and happily, everything was clean. The air conditioning was weak, but it was not noticeably warm at night. Our only real problem was the bed. If you moved a muscle, it squeaked. Whilst this was entertaining for all of 10 minutes, it became very annoying. Otherwise it was comfortable. We should have complained, but given that our stay was short, we gave it the 'stiff upper lip' treatment.

That was our only gripe about the accomodation itself. The only other concern was the price. Whilst this hotel is excellently positioned for a 5 minute walk to the Roman Arena, it is only a 2 star hotel (albeit a decent standard) and Euro150 per night seems a little steep (opera season or not!). Compare this to our two nights stay, a stone's throw from Piazza San Marco in Venice at a 3 star with canal view for Euro130 per night.

If I were return to Verona, I'd try and book earlier and go for one of the places with consistently good reviews on this site. If I couldn't get one, I wouldn't mind staying here again if the price was right.

I would have thought, that outside Opera season you could get a room here at a very good rate.
