I absolutely loved it here, definitely one of the most beautiful parts of Verona. Just be warned, dress appropriately, as I was asked very nicely to leave as I was in shorts.

Despite the flippant title, this ancient basilica - it dates from 807 - is an impressive reminder of how religion and faith ruled the lives of our ancestors. It's a fair trot from the centre of the ancient city of Verona and is best approached by following the river Adige past the old walls and fort - trying to negotiate the trip via the rather inadequate tourist maps will add several kilometres to your walk.
We were in Verona during freak torrential rain which gradually progressed until it reached monsoon proportions, hence the title of this review.
The basilica has an excellent example of the original cloisters and has survived both natural and man-made disasters. Take time to wonder at the coffered wooden ceiling which is fashioned in the shape of a ship's keel and try to spot the various additions which have been added to the church over the centuries.
Walking back into Verona the ancient bridge which spans the river was barely visible through the downpour and I hope future visitors will dare to take out their cameras - ours remained firmly cased against the elements. There was light-hearted moment to lift our dampened spirits as we watched a Mallard duck waddling down the main square in Verona - it seemed quite at home amongst the traffic as it splashed around the flooded cobbles.
Give the Roman arena in the centre a miss - the amphitheatre has been fitted with nasty modern steel scaffolding to accommodate plastic chairs - completely spoiling the the whole experience. At first I hoped it was merely a temporary measure to accommodate a festival but I discovered it was a permanent fixture - modern authorities are also capable of vandalism, it seems.

Relax when you are in Verona, the whole town is for nice strolls around, so just slow down and enjoy food, people watching, the atmosphere
