Owner description: Situated behind the busy Piazza Erbe, this central square is dominated by a Dante statue made in 1865 plus two buildings built by Palladio, the Palazzo della Raggione and the Loggia del Capitanato.

Make sure you do not miss this square and take the time and trouble to walk through to this Piazza from the attached Piazza delle Erbe. It is quiter than Piazza dei Erbe and probably has more interesting archetechture and certainly history related to Verona. The square is dominated by the former city hall, the Loggia del Consiglio, and beyond is the Palace built by the city's most powerful family, the Scaligeri, whose tombs are at the far end of the piazza in the Arche Scaligere. The middle of the square has a statue of the writer Dante due to the fact that one of the Scagileri, Cangrande I, was his main patron.

I am always humbled when I stand amidst such historical architecture. It's a great little square with some very nice restaurants with outside dining. A great place to people watch.

What a delightful surprise to walk into this small Piazza, and realize all the history that surrounds you. Just beautiful.

One can imagine tourists bent on buying trinkets finding nothing of value in Piazza Signori especially after Piazza Erbe, but that would miss the point. This is a place to pause in the rush of visiting the list of sites. There is Dante, regal and straight. There are the frescoes and the wonderful buildings. There are folks ambling, slowing down for a moment in their hurry to get to someplace "important". This is Verona, real without polish. On every side there are porticos leading to something interesting, as well. Stop by and stop.

Be sure to continue on through Piazza Erbe to Piazza Signore! We enjoyed bringing a soccer ball here with the kids. It was an amazing evening to see everyone from local toddlers to little old Italian ladies with canes shuffling to kick the ball as they passed!
