We were heading for a restauranta few yards away that was displaying a TA sticker and suddenly saw Da Franz on the right in a small area set back from the street. We looked at the menu and saw they were serving risotto alle seppie which I wanted to try so we went in.

Maurizio did not give us a menu, but patiently read all the specials to us (there were plenty!). They served a glass of prosecco each and amuse bouche at the start and the food was exquisite; the risotto was spectacular! Mainly fish, we heard a fellow diner explain that the Danieli had recommended the restaurant. The bill was about €180 for 2 including a bottle each of water and very good wine for 2 courses coffee and an excellent grappa.

I have since discovered that Maurizio has also served Brad and Angelina, Helen Hunt, Nicolas Cage, Monica Bellucci, Roberto Cavalli, Laura Dern, Jean Alesi, Greta Scacchi, Miuccia Prada, Mario Draghi, Mario Monti and even Queen Sofia of Norway! So I guess we were in good company and this was a remarkable restaurant to happen across accidentally.

The owner could not be more charming. We are a family of 4 and my son is a very picky eater and he was challenged as the owner was challenged. And it was wonderful .I got the restaurant from Arthur Schwartz the food maven. Fine dining it was.........................!!!!

This remains a wonderful restaurant - the new location (they moved from San Iseppo near the Giardini last year) and charmingly intimate premises are great, and the famously inventive fish recipes are still prepared with loving care and brio by Signor Franco's terrific team, now headed by his immensely dedicated and knowledgeable son Maurizio. We have been devoted diners at Hostaria da Franz for many years and always thoroughly enjoy the relaxed elegance, marvelous local fish and shellfish and impressive winelist. And the service is always outstanding: the staff are splendidly warm, welcoming and attentive without any loss of polish and elegance. Justly famous and very good value for one of Venice's celebrated best. No outdoor dining any longer, but the innumerable pluses far outweigh this one aspect of the old restaurant that we loved and still miss.

A small family style restaurant slightly off the main track. This restaurant was supposed to be a fish/seafood restaurant and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Maurizio was careful to explain every item on the menu and was prepared to make variations to suit one's taste and preference. As main course, we had the seabass and lucerna (? a local fish) and they were both deliciously prepared. We also had a combination appetizer platter to share as well as the squid ink risotto. All were excellent as was the service. Price was reasonable for what we got. Definitely recommended and we shall eat at this restaurant again if we return to Venice.

My husband and I ate here while in Venice on our 25th wedding anniversary trip. The restaurant is small and intimate with an elegant yet homey feel. The owner was there to greet and seat us. He oversaw the entire restaurant and was attentive to the diners. He obviously has a love of the restaurant business and serving the freshest best seafood prepared in the most authentic Italian ways.He asked our preferences and then offered suggestions which we took and were glad we did. Everything was absolutely delicious and the experience was wonderful. We highly recommend this restaurant.
